8800GT Problems!?
Hi guys, first post here hope your all well!
Basically having some problems with my card, I think. Recently started crashing a lot in games such as COD4. Even the main menu screen is quite jerky and slow and the general system performance has gone down hill dramatically. Got a fairly old system: Intel Core 2 4300@1.80GHz Nvidia 8800GT 512mb 6.14.0011.9562 drivers 4Gb RAM buts its a mix of 2 sticks, one kingston. just noticed my dxdiag says i have 2gb when i have 4 in there? Really not sure what the problem is, had this setup for a while and its been rock steady but getting lots of BSOD and things like firefox crashing etc. . . Virus wise it should be all clear. BSOD are sometimes nv4disp.dll, once it was a NVATABUS.SYS, and more recently and frequently it says the standard schpeil and some "0e1010101ee" nonsense. Any of you guys got any ideas as to what it could be? I just did a driver clean using Driver Sweeper for the gfx drivers and reinstalled the latest. If you need any other info I will get it asap! Thanks for your interest and many regards, George EDIT: Also swapped the mem sticks around and one at a time etc, same problems Last edited by littleweed; Nov 29, 2009 at 10:37 PM. Re: 8800GT Problems!?
It maybe heat issues since you get some BSODs , check the CPU and the video card temps.

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
My money is on your memory.
Can you recreate the BSOD's using only one stick at a time? If so does it only happen with one particular stick? The memory may not be bad but it may be degraded. Something seems fishy with DXDiag only reading 2GB's. |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
In addition to the above, don't forget the PSU, if it is not a good brand, it could have degraded over the years to a level that it cannot power your PC components at a satisfactory level.

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Thanks for the fast reply.
Upon reading them with an HD YouTube video in the background I just got another BSOD saying IRQL_NOT_LES_OR_EQUAL folowed by more 0x000000A stuff. CPU is running fine it seems at 50C after the crash or less. GPU temp I just can't seem to find where that is, I use NVTempLogger but it the program just freezes upon execution. I still get the crashes when I take the mem sticks out and if I remember correctly BSOD's too but I will take them out now and re-check its blue screening. Would the PSU cause these crashes? It has been running fine with fairly intensive gaming and dvd burning for 6months or so since I have had the card. Many thanks again George |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
PSU can definitely cause crashes if it's degraded overtime, and they'll be subtle, If you don't have one to swap you can try memory first by doing Optix's Suggestion (one stick at a time) Also never underestimate the importance of blowing out your computer with compressed air, if you've never done it, could also be a heat build up somewhere you're not aware of (especially in PSUs)

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
To measure gpu temps, try GPU-Z.

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Ran GPU-Z but on the sensors tab all I have are :
GPU Core Clock Memory Clock Shader Clock Memory Used nothing about the temps or VDDC's etc I have seen in screenshots :S changed the gfx card to my old 8800GTS and swapped memory in and out and still the same crashes but faster! can run cod4 for about 5-10secs ingame before it freezes up Again thanks for everyones help, I appreciate it! george |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
The last version of GPU-Z 0.3.7 listed here does have GPU temps sensors , I tried it and it is working , shows mine @ 45c.
Download GPU-Z 0.3.7 - FileHippo.com |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Does the 8800gt have temp sensors?

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
It should , almost every card has let a 8800gt. maybe it is a manufacture fault or something ?

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Check out RivaTuner or EVGA's Precision. Both should provide temperature readings.

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Can't you just test with another PCI-e card? Maybe something is faulty with your OS...

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Fixed!
Basically took the entire computer apart, got rid of all the dust etc and re-gunked the CPU and everything to find out it was one of the memory sticks. Very strange considering I tested each memory individually and the CPU temp was always low but after doing some intensive mem tests it turns out one of the sticks had a few problems. Re-tuned the whole lot, mem, cpu and GFX and pushed another 20% out of it! Thanks to everyone for being patient with such a bonehead, peace and love ![]() george |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
Indeed. Glad you got it isolated.
I try to clean mine once a month since 6 fans kicks up a lot of dust and I usually tinker with it at the same time, route cables, check connections, etc. |

Re: 8800GT Problems!?
You could try foam air filters. Gray colored ones to conceal the dust a bit are my fav.
