Default Post Overclocking GeForce 4

So I have a GeForce 4 PNY 64mb card. What is better for overclocking? Overclock the RAM or the GPU? I can't seem to get decent results...I overclocked the GPU to 300 and RAM to 550 and it made my games run smooth then sporadically studder. I can't get any good number going that give me a good 3dMark score. Does anyone have any good ratios or values to use for decent results? Thanks in advance.

clock both settings up until you start getting artifacts. clock it down 1 notch, then clock each one up individually (also until you get artifacts). basically, either of them will give you a speed increase, and they don't really have to be porportional. just overclock it till it bleeds

I think it would be better to maintain the existing ratio and to raise both values up for 10%. It should give you about 10% increase in fps and yet card won't get too hot.
If you have some good additional cooling device(s), you can go up to the 20%. I wouldn't go any further than that, 'cause it is not only the problem of whether the card can endure it or not but also the problem of the AGP's supply-line, motherboard controlers etc. .

You're lucky. The highest I can attain is 290/500 if I go higher with the mem I get terrible artifacts.

I found once I added a Tt Copper VGA cooler to the GPU and an old set of alluminum ram sinks ( my first online purchase ) things improved dramatically. The bigest difference was in the core overclocking I gained with the copper cooler. My MSI Ti 4200 maxes out @ 315/615 and my best 3DMark result was 11395

I'm also thinking about overclocking my Chaintech GF4Ti4200. Say I go up in 10% increments, will it start to become unstable before there's any risk of damaging the card?

just keep going till it gets unstable. I have mine right now at 285/600.... I've ran it at 290/600 but it is LESS stable at that higher speed, even with an extra fan blowing on it.

avoid overclocking; way too many abnormalities when doing so

Well, if you overclock properly, then there won't be a problem... just keep going in small paces and pieces until you get unstable, then back down a notch or two...

I noticed you're using the older 41.09 drivers instead of the 4201's. Are the older set

faster for you ?

Well.... When I run any drivers above the 41.09 they get weird in this little puzzle game I got....called snood. If I run above the 41.09 the snood game runs so slow....i don't know why.....No AA of AF. It's just a simple 2D puzzle game that you can play on a card with 2mb VRAM.

But still.. I tried the 42.01 and the 42.70......they both did that to my games.....aside from that I see no worthwhile gain in games to keep anything beyond the 41.09.

I did a bit of playing about with the clock settings of my Ti4600 today.

Running 3DMark 2001 with the standard settings of 300/650 I normally get around

13500 points. With careful O/Clocking I managed to get it up 14179. This was with

the settings tweaked to 325/710. If I go any higher it becomes unstable and crashes.

Maybe with extra cooling I could squeeze more out of it but I'm more than happy with

my results so far.

You just posted a spammy one liner telling them that they were spamming DriveEuro - do you see a hint of irony anywhere?

I'm mearly telling them that their post was pointless and needless. I'd PM them but when you are downloading on a 56k modem and surfing I can't. It takes 2-4 minutes to load up a PM page when I have 2 or 3 downloads going. I can't stand waiting that long.
