Gaming question

Hey guys. I asked this question on the drivers board, but no one responded. Can someone help me out? Here's the message:

Hey guys, this is my first post. I'm sort of a n00b when it comes to different types of drivers.

This is my first fairly respectable video card. It's a Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT. I have the official drivers installed (nVidia 66.93), and it seems to be running very well. However, I'm aware that there are some "unofficial" drivers available that are supposed to own the nVidia ones. Here's my current setup:

GeForce 6600GT PCI-E
1GB DDR2
3GHz P4 w/ HT
460W PSU
i925X Chipset mobo
WinXP SP2
DirectX 9.0c

Basically I play HL2, FarCry, Final Fantasy XI, Splinter Cell series, Doom3.

One extremely annoying/unsatifactory issue I have is w/ Splinter Cell. I have the common problem of needing to force the game into "projected shadows" mode in the .ini file. In the normal buffered shadows mode, I get no shadows at all (huge part of SC if you've played it). I read that this is b/c nVidia no longer wishes to support buffered shadows. And honestly, the detail gets lost in projected mode. Plus there are still some missing shadows. PLUS it causes my fps to be lower.

Now, isn't Doom3 a shadow intensive game? I can only wonder what I'm missing.

Can you recommend some drivers to me? I don't OC (b/c i don't know enough about that). Are there any drivers to remedy my problem? Regardless, should I be using different drivers anyway?

Thanks!

Thank you very much!

if nvidia no longer supports the shadows in their cards/drivers, no driver mod can fix that .

There are many good choices for modded drivers, however. Here at DH we have Omega Drivers and zer0point Drivers. The Omega's are a bit more dated (61.xx I think), so you may want to try the zer0poitn drivers, which you can download and read up on HERE

Be sure and report any bugs you may find to us so we can fix them

PS - welcome to DH bud , pull up a chair and enjoy yerself

Ok. So, what will I notice different about your drivers? I'm sorry for asking so many questions, I don't know much about drivers.

PS: what does turning off vertical sync in the display settings do?

Thanks again!
