Nvidia Driver Issues
You see i recently upgraded (or so i thought...) from a radeon 9200 SE 128 Meg to a geforce FX5500 256 Meg. I have been told it was a pretty much pointless upgrade, my the performance increase is supposed to be nothing worth the money i paid to upgrade. In any event ive learned to live with that mistake... the thing i simply cant learn to live with is a DROP in performance.
On my old radeon, i used to be able to easily achieve 100 FPS constant in counter-strike 1.6. This isnt a great task... any card of decent quality should easily achieve this. So, first thing i did when getting home from the computer store was head to nvidia.com and download the latest drivers. Downloaded, installed, rebooted, started my first game of counter-strike on my new graphics card. However when i started playing i was greeted with a lowely 60 FPS, silly me, i left v-sync on... So i leave, head into nvidia control panel and dis-able v-sync by default and restart counter-strike. Once i get in, no change to my FPS, they still stand at a lowely 70 FPS. I absolutely do not know what is causing this. I have tried multiple driver sets, some give less FPS and some give slightely more. After searching continously i finally found a older Detonator driver set which gave me back my 100 FPS. Then i was told i was having these problems due to my ATI drivers still being on my system. So i download your fine driver remover program, follow the instructions to a T. Evertyhing goes fine, i remove ALL drivers from my computer and try the latest nvidia drivers once again. No go, still 70 FPS, fine, i will use the Detonator ones and get my 100 FPS. Nope, not gonna happen, suddenly these ones have decided to give me 70 FPS now too. Im lost... the graphics card is an obvious improvment, if only by a small amount. Im wondering if mayby the computer company underclocked my graphics card or something, other than that i dont know. If you have ANY suggestions at all, please, enlighten me, im willing to try most anything at this point... PS: I have tried both Omega and Zeropoint drivers, both do not help my card performance. |

So, after testing with numerous other drivers today and benchmarking my machine against some other high rate games it would appear the problem is this card simply doesnt like counter-strike 1.6. My problems come down to this~
Counter-strike 1.6 Running with the official Nvidia Drivers (from their homepage)- Emtpy (local hosted) server, no other players, no bots = MAX 75 FPS Counter-strike SOURCE Running with the official Nvidia Drivers (from their homepage)- Empty (local hosted) server, no other players, no bot = MAX 90 FPS World Of Warcraft Running with the official Nvidia Drivers (from their homepage)- Blackrock (PVP, High Population, American based) server = MAX 90 FPS Conditions of testing? Counter-strike 1.6- I created a local game on my computer. No other players are in the server and i have no bot programs running. Once a round started i didnt move, i simply sat at my spawn point and watched the FPS. Generally they varied between 65-75, they never broke 80. I have the console command "fps_max 100" on, running openGL mode, 800x600. In my nvidia control panel i have v-sync disabled, all other options remain at default. Counter-strike SOURCE- I created a local game on my computer. No other players are in the server and i have no bots in the server. Once a round started i didnt move, i simple sat at my spawn point and watched the FPS. The varied between 80-90. I have the console command "fps_max 100" on, running in openGL mode at 800x600 resolution. I also have all video options set to their medium/low settings. World Of Warcraft- I log into my druid character on the Blackrock server (this server is based in american and is a HIGH population PVP server. I live in Australia). Once i walked inside a major city (ie. Ogrimarr) my FPS varies between 60-90 (depending on what scenary im looking at). During everyday play, i recieve about 30-40 FPS. I am running in Direct3D mode on 1024x768 res with all video options set to medium. So you can see how i have come to conclusion that the card simply doesnt like Counter-strike 1.6. I have tried reinstalling Counter-strike 1.6 which provides no help. I have also tested CS:S and CS1.6 online. I tested both on a server with 15 additional people, on the CS1.6 server with 15 additional people my FPS stays at around the 60-70 FPS range. In CS:S server with 15 additional people my FPS drops to around 30-40. In the end i think this may be a minor problem of Nvidia not including standalone options for openGL in the control panel. The only program i have found to allow me seperate D3D and openGL options is a old program made for the Detonator4 drivers. This is now invalid, obviously. So this is the first and last nvidia card i will ever purchase, in a few weeks in will be looking into buying another new graphics card... this time i will be returning to THE FAR SUPERIOR ati made cards. Nvidia sucks... |

The 5500 isn't that great of a card. an ATI 9600 series would have been better.
It's unfair to say all nvidias suck when you bought one of the low end cards. |
