??? GeForce 6600 or ATi 9x00?

Looking to upgrade from my current Connect 3D Ati 9600 (128MB) to something with a little more punch.
Been looking at GF 6600 AGP and Ati 9600XT's as they both are in the same price range ~135 euros here.

The question is which of the above would provide more performance per buck and have longer lifespan?
I mainly play Far Cry, Painkiller, UT2003, a bit of HL2/CS:S, etc. and pref. with my tft's native resolution 1280x1024.

neither is a worthy upgrade from a 9600. the 9600xt will barely outperform the 9600 really. i'd go w/ something more like the 6600GT or the 9800pro.

i woudnt recommend nothing below a 6600gt with all those new games coming out .im sure that it would be a good thing to go from ur 9600xt to a 6600gt.

Well, the 6600, but I don't believe it's really "that much" better.

Thanks for the replies, turning my eye to the 6600GT's.

Found 2 choices in my price range, PNY Verto GF 6600GT 128M and Club-3D GF 6600GT 128M.
Now to choose one, propably no major difference in DVI-output signal quality in either... I hope.

Heh, I've always liked evga products, and have ordered the 6600gt, simply because it was the cheapest model available anyway.

Well I say go for the 6600gt, its a great card for the price. All in all specs aside I believe the 6600gt is a better card than the 9800 series card. I have room to speak here because I have owned both.

its just better

it runs better than a 9800 pro, and has more features. its also about $50 cheaper.

In fairness Acording to pricewatch.com the 6600GT ($166 and up )
starts @ $8 more then the cheapest 9800 pro (256bit) ($158 and up)

Wink

I would recommend a Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT, not a standard 6600 which performs very poor compared to the GT, to you.

You shouldn't even think about a ATi Radeon 9600-product (it is a good card, no flame intended , but it is not comparable to the Geforce 6600-line)

This is the information that counts:
6600GT: 8 Pixelpipelines - 128-bit Memorybus - 500 MHz Core / 1000 MHz Memory
-/+ 143 Million Transistors
9800Pro/XT: 8 Pixelpipelines - 256-bit Memorybus - 380-412 MHz Core / 680-730MHz Mem
-/+ 108 Million Transistors (requires lots of power)
9600Pro/XT: 4 Pixelpipelines - 128-bit Memorybus - 400-500 MHz Core / -/+ 750 MHz Mem
-/+ 80 Million Transistors

In Europe the 6600GT of the brand XFX is very popular, and so is Leadtek.

+ In the benchmarks you will see in practically 85% of the cases that the 6600GT kills the 9800XT (so it will kick the performance of the 9800Pro as well, how logical )
+ The 6600GT is a overclocking miracle (with stock coolingsystem it will easily reach over 580 MHz Core)
+ It consumes less power than a ATi Radeon 9800 Pro/XT.
+ Also it has the PS3.0/VS3.0-abilities (before getting into a PS2.0 vs 3.0-war, it's just an upgraded version of PS2.0, so don't attach too much value to this argument).
+ The pricetag of the 6600GT is very positive when compared to the 9800-series (190 Dollars I thought, but I am not an economical wonder )

- Sometimes the 6600GT gets Memorybus-limited, because it has a 128-bit bus. Fortuna-tely this won't happen very often, unless you are playing with lots of Anti-Aliasing and Anisotrophic Filtering enabled, then the 9800Pro/XT is a better choice (because of it's larger 256-bit bus)

*Reason of Edit: a negative argument has been added*

Hope my current Nexus 350W PSU will be enough to power the 6600GT and the rest of my rig.
Are Leadtek cards generally good quality? Cause they seem to be the cheapest ones here in Finland at ~200 euros or just under.

I've just replaced my faulty 9800pro with a leadtek 6600gt, it overclocks to 580/1100, scores 3798 in 3dmark05 and gives 83fps in doom 3, all at 1024x764 0af 0aa. My pro was flashed to an xt and I think this card kills the pro.

Not had time to stress test the card with mindless benchmarks due to work.
Had time to do a little gaming this weekend and it performs like a dream.

Test played the following:
Half-life 2, Far Cry (1.31), Painkiller (1.62) and America's Army (2.3).
Resolution is set to 1280x1024 and AA was off, 2x AF was on.

Performance wise this card is a big step up from my old Connect 3D Radeon 9600 128M, all the above games ran nice & smooth and looked damn good too.

I do not know much about the ATi card but I am using the MSI 6600 AGP 8x card on a P4 2.6 system and it sucks. Bullshit games like unreal tournament at 1024x768 resolution 120 refresh rate still have graphic lag.

On my Home system I am using the MSI 6600GT PCIE card. Now this is a different story. This card blows away my old ATi 9800XT card.

Just my opinion..... Do more research before you make your final choice.

(I like Ati)
