Help please, annoying!!

Hello all,

I resently upgraded from an Athlon XP 2500+ to an Athlon 64 2800+, and an msi K8MM-V motherboard. I currenty run that processor and mobo with a Radeon 9800 pro. I am getting random restarts, and random crashes while palying with physics systes and in games. I was told by my father that ATI cards and the new Athlon 64's do not mix well, and have many issues that are pretty mysterious. I am at my whits end, and I have a paycheck coming at the end of the week, and I was wondering if I should buy an Nvidia card, and if so which one, ect.

I'm also wondering if switching to Nvidia is the right choice. Lets get some knowledgable views please, no fanboys. Thanks guys.

Athlon64 dont have any problem with ATI card .. it's VIA chipset ... I myself built many system and the only problem so far was with VIA ... never got any problem on NF3/4 ....so i must say that NVidia is good for something ... ;-P++

BTW .. if you move from ATI to NVidia ( wich i think could be good if you think to spend a lot .. but if you buy something equivalent to your 9800pro it's worthless .. better buy a new NF3/4 mobo. ) buy a 6800gt

like i said ... under a 6800gt buy a new motherboard .. because it will be a worthless expense since 6600 are not much more powerful than a 9800pro.. if you re ready to spend some money go for the 6800gt and it should be fine ...

I assume that you didnt forget to plug the power in your card ... and what is your power supply .... if it's not powerful enough to support your new config it could be the culprit , you should get something like 20+ amp on the 12V rail...

random restarts could also be faulty memory. run a stress test on the memory (use memtest86) for several hours (6hrs. or more continuously) and if it comes out with out any erros, then it's the MoBo.

i have no problems at all with running an A64 with an ati card on a via chipset.

my guess is that its probably the memory thats faulty.

I currently am running 400W power supply, and yes I did remember to plug in the back of the video card.

I ran a pretty simple test just awhile ago. I took out my 9800 pro, and put in a GeForce 2 GTS, and ran the same program that hung up, and it worked perfectly. Then I put in a Radeon 7000, and it keeps on crashing the program and the main OS. So obviously its the radeon cards that are fucking it up.

i'm not sure what to do, buy a new motherboard or a new video card. A new mobo, I can buy a new motherbaord and processor, or just keep these parts and get a GeForce FX 6800 GT... Interesting results though.

By the way, while trying these cards I had no graphics drivers installed, so drivers shouldn't be the issue. Strange.

Edit: I took out 1gb of ram from my previous rig, and my dad ran memtest on linux, and it came up with a bunch of errors. My dad grabbed a stick of 512mb Centron ram, and did the test, and there was no errors. Not the memory =/

Alright, I know about drivers and updating them, ect.

I've built and owned my own computer since I was 5 yrs. old. hehe

All updated drivers. I'm not sure what type of power supply it is, but it is built like a tank. I seriously doubt it is the power supply, because over at a local computer store an employee has the same power supply wattage for his g4 3000+ and his 6800GT.

Also, power isn't an issue, since I was running my 2500+ with a radeon 9800 pro, fine. So It would make no sense if looking at it from the power angle for the old Radeon Rage to crap out.

After just browsing the internet for a little while the text of everything on the computer (Web sites, desktop, icons, ect.) became jarled and really jaggety. And since then I replaced the Geforce, and nothing is happening. Steady as ever.
