New nVidia Drivers

I was running everything fine and smoothly until I downloaded BF2, with the drivers 77.30, of course, I installed them. BF2 ran well, but I was getting random computer restarts with other games, after a while after the restarts I started to get a windows error message that my gfx card had trouble while rendering something, or entered an infinite loop... And after a while, I got a blue screen of death, problems related to my gfx card...

I reverted back to 71.89, and everything was fine, except that BF2 kept pissing me off telling me to update the drivers. After checking Nvidia's site, I saw the 77.72 drivers, and I thought: "They probably fixed the damn bugs." And I got them. Now, my games are crashing to desktop with no reason... At least that's better than restarting. I'm getting Omega's drivers until nVidia release a proper version...

Anyway, I'm still unsure if all those problems are nVidia's(that I don't believe would release such buggy drivers), or mine for some reason... So I thought I should ask more experienced people

I'm sure someone will ask, so here it goes, my system specs(as far as I know) are: P4 1,8ghz, 1024mb ram ddr, geforce 5600 FX 256mb, with windows XP - no service packs installed(i'll install SP1 tonight, but I refuse to install SP2... that "protection" is the same as not having sex to avoid aids.)

to begin....lemme say welcome to DH

And let me say that to fix all software related problems, a fresh format and windows install will fix all of life's windows related problems . lol. That's just how i am .

But if you do not want to reformat your computer, then i say download drivercleaner (that can be found here on DH). It is basically an app that will remove any remnants of previously installed drivers on your computer. Be sure to run it in safe mode though.

And back to windows...if you're going to install SP1, you may as well install SP2 while you're at it. SP2 does include alot of critical fixes that are not included on the MSFT Windows Update site. If you do not like them, you can disable the firewall, pop-up blocker, and virus protection features included in SP2.

Thanks :P

I hate formatting the computer, so I just reinstall windows :P That way I won't lose everything but only my windows folder. Still, I don't feel like doing that I'll try the drivecleaner thing then... Even though Omega drivers are giving me now a better performance at all games, and no crashes, etc... (I went from low to medium quality at BF2, and from 800x600 to 1024x768 at GTA San Andreas with no performance loss)

It's not only that, if you are a MSN user, you should know that MSN blocked several file formats because they are considered unsafe, including MP3. There's a crack out there to enable the sending again, but when you have SP2, the moment the transfer is over it'll say that the file is unsafe and it'll "block" it. Apparently "block" means delete because I couldn't find the file anywhere. Just an example, there are several other things pissing me off that I couldn't find a way to turn them off, I even tried to contact MS support about a way to turn it off, and they just ignored me.

Personally I never heard of and I don't even think it's possible to put a virus in a mp3 file, well, you can put it, but I don't think listening to it can trigger the virus, so deleting a mp3 file because it's "unsafe" is ridiculous. I hope SP3 doesn't block internet access so we won't be exposed to threats.

it's not just MSN/Hotmail that deny the sending of .mp3 files, Gmail has also done this along with blocking .EXE files that you would email to yourself or friends. The reason they do this is to prevent viruses from spreading. A virus can be attached to a .EXE or .mp3 file and as soon as the file is opened, the virus is executed and begins to spread itself onto your computer, and then send itself to everybody on your mailing list. that's just something that the mail service providers want to prevent from happening.

As for a windows installation, it's best to do the full install than just a "recovery" which is what you said, removes the windows folder, and re-installs it. You loose all your settings, but the saved files you have, are kept. It's not the best way to do it because something could remain behind and screw everything up all over again. If you do a windows install, do it from scratch. I know it's a pain in the ass, but the more often you do it, the less frustrating it is....that's why i install windows so damn much :-p.

Yeah, but still, I know what I'm getting If I have a song I like, I send it to my friends to see if they like the band too, and they do the same.

That's what I do, I delete the windows folder and install it over it, I lose all my settings, but that's better than to lose everything :P I have too much to backup if I decide to format.

then that's why you get a second HDD to save all the stuff you don't want to lose when your reformat your system . that or burn it all onto CDs or DVDs.
