Hey there,
I built a pc 2 months ago that was an nforce4 ultra motherboard with a x850 XT PE ATI pci-express card. When i played games on it such as Quake 3 or Counter-strike it was giving me this annoying following problem: The fps is very high, always - it never drops. There is a sort of motion blur/stutter 80% of the time whilst moving the mouse around. It's not a strong stutter but just enough to annoy you. It's not a refresh rate problem as i've used the same monitor on older rigs with the same refresh rate and had quake3 running very smooth. Now this annoyed me alot so I sold on this rig I had and have bought a new one. I got a Shuttle SN25P (which uses the nforce4 motherboard chipset) and an Nvidia 7800 GT pci-express. FPS is still amazing but guess what - same problem! Now i don't know how I can have the SAME problem on 2 completely different machines. I've tried everything, every single graphic setting i've played with, downloaded all the latest drivers for my mobo and graphics card. My entire PC inc. gfx card has a v.low temperature all the time. I am using a DVI to VGA adapter on my pci-express nvidia card (which I also used on my previous pci-e ATI card) - perhaps this may be the problem? Or perhaps there are more of you out here with the same problem? Please help - Thankyou

I've located the problem! (I think!)
It's something to do with the mouse i'm using, if i use the keyboard to move left right and forward i get no stutter. But if i use the mouse it stutters. Phew, im glad i found out what it is. Now to fix it.. any ideas? I have a Intelmouse Optical. I've tried it both USB and PS2 and told the computer to never turn off the USB power for the mouse. I've installed the 4.1 drivers and the 5.2 drivers. Still no luck.. Any ideas? |

It can't be a new mouse that i'm needing as I have another spare Intelimouse Optical that is giving me the same problem. I've tried with using NO drivers and also with these 5.3 drivers - still the problem is there.. Damn this is annoying..

Hmm.. perhaps this fixed it - but why?
If i go into dxdiag and change my DirectSound acceleration to Basic Acceleration (the one before No Acceleration) it makes the mouse lag seem to go away... any ideas why? And what will having Basic Acceleration mean? I still need to test it thoroughly. |

There could be some physical damage to the Mobo.

what components are the same in both computers?
It could be a power issue, if you don't have a surge protecter get one. If you do though try reseting it with you computer off or try a different outlet in you house. |

I've narrowed down the problem alot now. It seems to be a general problem all over the computer (whilst on apps or games). Let me try to explain it.
I drew a picture on Paint of a group of vertical lines. Then, if i use the mouse and drag the window around my screen (horizontally) the lines all break and tear whereas if it's moved up/down there is no tearing. Any vertical line (such as the edge of windows, scrollbars etc.) tear if they are moved horizontally.. This seems to be what is happening in games too. I have enabled/disabled vsync and tripple buffering, they didnt work. I've tried other monitors, same problem. Any help will be appriciated! |

ive gone onto 2 other computers in my household (both use shitty graphics cards so u cant mess around with vsync settings) but they are both getting the tearing on vertical lines when moved left-right... wtf :S

Are you sure you have your motherboard/chipset drivers and nvidia card drivers properly installed?
Have you used Driver cleaner Are you using any of the same computer parts from the last computer...any at all is your computer by a fridge or AC unit. Thats all I can come up with. |

well, all I could say is you have to find the connection between both computers. List anything that is the same or similar.

It has to be something to do with vsync...
When im moving windows around on the desktop i'm getting tearing accros it as it moves from left/right. This is the effects that happen if vsync is disabled. I have vsync enabled but i think that it only takes effect whilst in a game.. Is there no way to get vsync to work on the desktop? Is there any way to 'confirm' that vsync is ACTUALLY working when its enabled. My games are running slightly smoother now (not as much flickering) but im getting the texture shimmering problem that everyones with 6xxx and 7xxx cards have been describing. |

To get Vsync to be enabled all the time for every application, go to properties then display. There should be a Vsync option under performance and quality settings, set vsync to enable and apply and click ok.
