6800GS or 7800GT
Hey guys. I may build a new system soon, who knows, but I was wondering what card I should get. I don't play games often, but when I do, I want my video card to do whatever I ask of it, including high settings, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, etc.
The 6800GS is about $100 USD cheaper than the 7800GT (both PCI-e). I don't want to shell out the extra $100 if I'm not going to use the full potential of the 7800GT, but I'd hate to get a 6800GS and end up being disappointed and regretting not spending the extra money. Thoughts? Ideas? Comments? Thanks, -fobis

You will definitely enjoy the 7800gt alot more than the 6800gs. I can run Counter-strike:Source/Half-life 2 on all high with 8xAA/16xAF, the same with BF2, and pretty much any other game I can throw at it.

the 7800GT will be leaps and bounds better than the 6800GS.

Well the general consensus is to get the 7800GT. I figured that would happen.
But is the extra $100 really worth it? Like I said, I don't game too often. Ohhh, the choices in life... so difficult... even over the trivial things such as this...

If you like high resolution and eye candy. Yes, it is definately worth the price. If they made them in AGP, i'd buy one in a heartbeat.

IMO, the extra $100 is completely justified, go with the 7800GT

I can only play at a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 anyways, is it still worth it?

if you dont really care about aa/af at 1280x1024, and your a light/mid gamer Id say go with the 6800 but if you want to up the aa/af id go with the 7800. Id think its worth the 100 either way, The 7800 is a little more future proof, and will let you play games on high for just a little bit longer.

Well, I guess I'll have to go with the 7800GT (if my budget allows, that is).
Thanks for all your help, everyone. Now, let's just see if I actually do build a new system or not.

I bought a XFX 6800GS with a 485 core speed, 1100 memory, it is one of the better 6800GS cards, but I don't really use it for much of the mainstream gaming, I like Flight sims primarily and I have been happy with my card.

Heck, might as well go for the BFG 7800GT oc. It comes out of the box overclocked. I just keep on turning up the settings in BF2 every time I play--it hasn't slowed down yet.
I just put on the new Rainbow 6: Lockdown demo and cranked up every thing to max at 1600x1200--the card just says-"IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?!
