I see how manual steering could be nice but when you are going slow or stopped and trying to move the wheels makes it very hard. I have seen people do it. To bad you can't turn on and off the power steering

So I need a little help!
I need help from those who drive manual! As you know I just got a 2000 Manual Mustang. It works great and I am getting better at drive it with out all the damn stalling that happens when I try to get the car to move. I really don't do that much anymore but the problem I face now is being stopped on a hill and trying to go. Not only do I roll back like 200 feet lol but I can never really get it... And I feel I am burning up my clutch a lot and I just suck trying to go up a hill. If anyone has any tricks or any advice that would be great. P.S. Don't worry I have a big hill by my house that I practice on so I am not in any traffic

it takes practice, lots of practice. basicly what your going to do is use all 3 pedals at the same time. keep one foot on the brake, let the clutch out and give it gas like you would on a normal take off. at about that exact same time, take your foot on the brakes and you shouldnt roll back at all.
as for the power steering bit, i fully agree taht it sucks at low speeds. with an 18" wheel though, its not so bad. really builds up your fore arm muscles if you do alot of low low speeds driveing. *really cd's? thats how you do it? i was taught to do it exactly the same way i would normaly take off but have the brake slightly pressed until it just starts to creep forward.

My advice? Let the clutch out and go.
My old prelude had torque sensitive power assist steering.. Like no power steering at high speed, but really really easy to steer in a parking lot.

Well BMX letting the clutch out and going stalls the car right?
I am just really worried about blowing another clutch? Do you know for the most part if the clutchs are very easy to break or can they take some beating? |

lol....clutches can take a beating
. you shoulda seen how i treated my 8 . i kept doing burn outs, clutch drops, speed shifting (shifting while gas is still engaged), donuts, going from reverse to first gear, or first gear to reverse while still moving at ~10Mph did alot of high RPM driving (c'mon, i couldn't resist that 9k RPM redline ), and a bunch of other stuff that i can't remember right now that. for how i drove my 8, it should have been on it's 3rd clutch . but the miles were low at 38,500 when i crashed it. freakin' thing was still under manufacturer warranty ![]() so all in all.....yes, a clutch could take a beating. but once in a while (just as in computers) you'll come across one that is poor quality and will need replacing sooner than most. |

I taught my wife how to drive stick.. I actually taught myself too- when I drove my first car off the lot- I learned on the way home. What kills a clutch is heat. You can slip a clutch on a hill with no brakes on at low engine RPM w/o stalling and without moving forward all day long. For a few seconds it will not hurt anything - all day long would burn the clutch up. No you won't stall- just give it more gas.

I have shifted my 200sx se-r without even pushing the clutch in, just to see if I could do it.. It works... but made a funny noise.

i was planning on replacing the clutch around 65k miles w/an aftermarket stage 2 clutch, and put on a lightweight flywheel and short shifter all at the same time while the tranny was separated from the engine. would have been around $1,000 USD in parts, and maybe another $500 in labor for everything. that would have been another 4 months from now if i still had my car. the easiest way to tell that a car's clutch is going out is if it begins to slip. when a clutch is slipping, the tell-tell signs of it is when you have the car in gear and give the car gas, but it won't go any faster and the RPMs just go up until the gears finally engage |

indeed, it just takes time and practice.
i start out driveing my dads 85 S-10 for about a week. nothing like learning on a car that has a 350K mile clutch on it. by the end of the week i still couldnt take off gently... vette on the other hand has a very strong clutch and only took me a few days to get down properly.

Well hills are tricky... Especially in heavy traffic. What I do is just wait for the guy in front to go, then I very quickly give it gas let out on the clutch at the same time to take off. It is like all one motion.
