monitor is dying
that's right, it's going kaput, kicking the bucket, or whatever you may want to call it. it's funny how it's slowly dying too
. the top half just goes completley black and has a bright line horizontally through the middle.this gives me a great reason to upgrade . though, the time couldn't be at any worse time . I want to get that 24in. widescreen Dell monitor . but, ATM, since i can't, i just have to live w/my monitor going only half out and tapping it a bit or adjusting it to get it back to normal.

i've had the monitor for about 2yrs. already. i don't know how long the previous owner had it for though. i've been running it at 1600x1200 @ 75Hz since the day i got it. and i know the previous owner did the same. think that may have something to do w/the life span of the monitor?
oh yea....it's a CRT

i got a good 8 years out of my old CRT. only in the past 2 years or so did it start to go. it was still actually working fine when i upgraded to my 2001fp, i just didnt care for the weak colors in some other quirks in it.

Vertical collapse...
Probably cost about 60-90(USD) to get repaired at a reputable shop by someone who knows what he's doing...

if it's anything like CRTs..... there is a portion of the monitors electronics that basically tells the monitor where to draw thing...
The demension of viewable space is also one of these fuctions... where the horizontal and vertical holds are (area of space).. when vertical or horizontal holds fail.. (there are 2 for each) you get in say your case, the top vertical hold failing completely (it doesn't waver, just failed completely providing only the bottom half of the screen correct? ) where as fluctuating holds will kinda produce a slight distortion or wobbling effect intermitently or randomly. Where it'll drop maybe a portion of the screen, and different spots.. (not always are they directly centered portions.. it could be the edges/corners that are dropped somewhat).. In any case, swimtech figures to get it fixed is going to cost you 60-90 USD to get your monitor back in working order.. But then again you've got the choice, 60-90 bucks to spend on a monitor that MAY have another part fail soon (as i've experienced that as soon as one thing starts to screw around on you, the rest falls in suit not to far after.. occasionally... not always).... or you could pocket that money and save for a newer model lcd... your choice though

Long story short - in a CRT only...
Vertical deflection circuits make the display work from the top to the bottom of the screen. There are generally two transistors (one for the top half, one for the bottom half) or one IC that handle that function. Horizontal deflection circuits make the display work from side to side. There is generally one good-sized transistor that makes that part of the deflection circuit work (along with a large transformer...) - that part sounds to be ok in your unit. If your CRT is older than 5 years, I would buy a new one rather than get the old one fixed - new CRTs are pretty inexpensive - or as Judas mentioned - save the money toward a new LCD display (which are more reliable by design).

so there are only 2... one for horizontal and vertical.... so if only half of the either fails... wouldn't both portions show the same results? (as they shrink to the center of the monitor tube correct? )

in order to get a picture on the entire screen, i have to either hit my monitor to get a picture. but more recently, i've been needing to tilt the monitor further and further downwards. |

so then you're saying that it would be worth taking this monitor in to getting fixed then? i'm kinda strapped on cash right now, and although this is a great excuse for me to buy a new monitor, it has come at the worst possible time
.

i'd suggest keep shaking it till it blows up and then make a descision
![]() no j/k You said it was how old? sure you couldn't RMA it? a well... either save 60-90USD for new monitor, or spend it now and keep your old. (hopefully)

i've had it for almost 2yrs., but i don't know how long the previous owner had it for though. i'm sure it's at least 3yrs. old already.
i'll look on the manufacturer's website to see how long the warranty is for to see if i can do an RMA on it. otherwise, i gotta get a new one, or get this one fixed. |

I'm not sure I'd bother getting it fixed CDs.. the cost won't justify the price of a new CRT. CRT's are dirt cheap now (if you can find one.. hehe) and I'd recommend just getting a new one.
