NOTE: According to one news source, one of the children has died so far.

EDIT: Earlier reports of one dying at the scene were wrong. That child is listed in critical condition...the 2-year old.

A group of three children and two adults were struck by a vehicle at a McDonald's restaurant in Covington.

The victims were identified as Anita King, 36, of North Carolina and 2-year-old daughter Avery Nicole King; and Stephanie Casola, 33, of Covington and her children, Jacob Paul, 4, and Isaac Raymond, 3.

The children were airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Anita King was treated and released from Newton General Hospital in Covington, authorities said. Stephanie Casola was in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta.

Avery was listed in extremely critical condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Tuesday night, the other children were both listed in stable condition.

They were hit by a Honda Accord.

Covington-Newton County police say that the driver, 36-year-old Lanny Barnes, has been taken into custody.

Covington Assistant Police Chief Almond Turner says Barnes faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault. His is due to make a first court appearance on Wednesday morning at 8:30.

"All indications are that he intentionally hit them," Turner said.

Ryan Boldman-Snyder, 20, an employee at the McDonald's restaurant, was on a break outside when he heard screaming, and said Barnes was "smiling the whole time."

"He came with the intent to hurt somebody," Boldman-Snyder said.

Witnesses tried to pull Barnes out of his car in the restaurant parking lot. Police officers finally pulled him out of the car from the passenger-side front door, Boldman-Snyder said.

Barnes has had mental difficulties, his mother, Mary, told The Associated Press.

"He's been suffering with depression for years," she said, her voice shaking after being told by a reporter what happened. "Lord have mercy."

The restaurant is located near the intersection of US 278 and Baker Street NE.

Yup, there are crazy people everywhere. You just don't always hear about it. The media in the US tends to focus on different things at different times.

For instance; The most recent trend for the media's focus was female school teachers having sex with young students. Do you think that this period in time is the only time something like that has happened? NO! It's just what the media felt would give them good ratings so they ran with it...

You are absolutely right! I was thinking about this very thing just the other day. The media shouldn't even be called 'news agency' anymore because they really don't report the news. They sensationalize things that happen so much it's sickening.

BUT, we really can't put all the blame on the media because people generally will spend more money to read this idiotic stuff than the really hard news.

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief. It's just so horrible to think that someone could do a thing like this. There are witnesses saying he was laughing the whole time he was hitting them.

Then, according to all the reports, he'll likely get off with some kind of insanity plea.

they should let him have hsi plea.....and put him in a straight jacket.....and then the transport van to the sanitarium should break down on 285...and he should "escape" into traffic......yea......that's it "escape"...not "be pushed"
