The latest bike in my collection

well as some of you know I own a few BMW bikes, but I managed to work out a deal to get a rare 2001 996S fogarty rep from a mate. she has a full service history and has loads of carbon fibre bits n pieces as well as a full race system which shakes the foundations of my house when she is at idle (no seriously).

This is one for the garage and very good summer days only.

well it a twin, not a inline four so it wouldnt really, but due to the noise you seem to be going faster than you really are which is good for my license.

Alright bro! Dude that bike is AWESOME!

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask you some questions about your BMWs...I was considering getting one but a friend of mine blew up at me and was like "BWAA SIDEWAYS ENGINES!!" or something i couldnt understand. He seemed to think that simply saying they had sideways engines was enough to deter me.

Anyway thats a gorgeous bike.

Sounds like a right idiot. What he means by "sideways" engines is that BMW tend to use parallel twin engines or "boxer" engines. these are two cylinders - horizontally opposed which many sports bike riders find ugly looking - to see what I mean look on this page (see below). What however is more important is they are rock solid, (some of the BMW tourers easily have hit half a million miles and still going - also did you see the ewan mcgregor "long way round" show? in which he and a mate travelled the world on BMW 1150GS bikes? those had the twin I mention powering them). They also have a great characteristic and feel (imo).

http://www.promotor.nl/published/prm...r1200s.nl.html

However, BMW have released a new series of bikes which are inline 4's - a series of 4 cylinders mounted vertically which would be more to the traditional "japanese" style seen on hondas, yamahas, suzuki's etc.

This engine is making around 170bhp and is as powerful as anything the japanese have produced. This may seem confusing to someone who knows nothing about engines, however you will find certain people like specific engine design. Many people love the high and free revving inline 4s as they can hit 15,000rpm really easy and produce more power than a twin (whether its a BMW twin or ducati 90degree twin). However the flip side of the coin is that an inline four can (to some) be a bit on the bland side and a twin tends to have more character and can produce high amounts of torque.

I personally love all the engines above, even the aprilla based rotax 60 degree twins and can adapt to riding any. Some people however are pretty set in their ways and only buy a specific engine style. I have two bmws - one has the inline four in the picture above with a full race exhaust system from akraprovic, (making around 180bhp) the other is a 1200c boxer engine which produces around 122bhp. The ducati is a 90degree twin which produces around 125bhp with a full race system). All have different characteristics and feel vastly different when being riden, but I love them all!

Allan....
what the heck do you need with all that power anyway? LOL
I find running really fast and falling down dangerous...
I wouldn't own one personally even though its a fine piece of machinery you got to be in shape
to drive a fantastic bike like that. If I rode a bike like that I would look like a pig straddling a fence.
