The whole shuttle disaster could have been avoided, if some higher-ups at NASA would have checked their e-mails.
![]() Check out this story and tell me this guy didn't hit the nail square on the head before the disaster happened. ![]() I'm NOT saying that anyone is at fault for not checking, I'm just saying what a bummer it is that someone caught it and couldn't get it to someone important enough to do something about it in time. ![]() Can you imagine being that guy and going thru your e-mails the next day and seeing that?

I believe that NASA knew what the problem was as soon as it happened. If they release the info too soon, it makes the public believe that they could have done something to prevent the disaster.
I always knew it was something with the landing gear door. That's like ripping a hole in the front of a passanger air-liner. Creates too much drag and the whole thing rips apart. |

It really doesn't make a difference either way. Once they were in space, they were pretty much goners.
![]() NASA couldn't do anything to fix the problem, so it was just better for them to keep it under wraps to prevent mass hysteria and the like. Apparently, pieces of foam fall off the shuttle a lot. I guess they just figured it wouldn't be problem, since it had happened before. Honestly, I don't think they were too worried about checking their e-mail when they were trying to reach a shuttle launch deadline.

Well, they could have stayed in space, hopped over to the ISS, and stayed there until another shuttle came up for em... and then we could have just scavenged the Columbia for parts for the station...

I hope such factors will be considered for the future missions.

Oh well for that... I didn't know the specifics of that, and at this point it would be little more than wishful thinking...

Yeah, it was the fact they didn't have docking abilites, or materials to repair any damage they could have found, once they left Earth's atmosphere it was a case of hope for the best, they might make it
