You REALLY have my sympathies Dyre, and I sincerely mean that in a total unpatronising way. A life without music would be exceptionally hard to deal with and i cant even begin to comprehend what it must be like.

I admire you for dealing with that in such a positive way, you always seem so happy about the forums.

Amen.

Just in case you haven't heard the song:
James Taylor - The Secret 'o Life

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time
Any fool can do it
There ain't nothing to it
Nobody knows how we got to
The top of the hill
But since we're on our way down
We might as well enjoy the ride

The secret of love is in opening up your heart
It's okay to feel afraid
But don't let that stand in your way no
'Cause anyone knows that love is the only road
And since we're only here for a while yeah
Might as well show some style

Give us a smile now
Isn't it a lovely ride
Sliding down
And gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Now the thing about time is that time
Isn't really real
It's all on your point of view
How does it feel for you
Einstein said that he could never understand it all
Planets spinning through space
The smile upon your face

Welcome to the human race
Isn't that a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Isn't that a lovely ride
Oh mama yes
See me sliding down
And gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It's just a lovely ride

Now the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time

Hearing aids don't do anything for you? Or do those not help much?

Not much anymore, although I do wear them. My loss is so great that by the time the audio is amplified to my loss, it becomes distorted enough that it's akin to listening to someone talk under water. Unless I see a person's lips, I have no chance of understanding them.

Hate to hijack this thread with this topic, though. But, at least everyone knows why I have little chance of associating songs to anyone's screenname.

BTW, this particular type of hearing loss is very prevalent in my family. We're not born with the loss, but it can develope at any age or stage of life due to inner ear nerve damage. Many of my family suffer from the same problem.

Thank you.

If I were to determine what I most miss due to my hearing loss, I would have to say it's the music. It was so much of my life growing up and life seems a bit dull without it. I often actually wake up with songs from years ago going through my head. So, maybe Someone is making sure I don't forget.

Hm, I know there's some hereditary thing where in time a bone in the inner ear grows over the ear drum and the person's hearing goes in and out until the bone finally covers it.. could be fixed through surgery I think

Anyway-- PJ: Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-Englar (don't suspect anybody has heard of this )

It's kind of a laid-back atmospherey song, Icelandic.. you just seem like a laid-back kinda guy

wasn't it bach or mozart who was deaf but composed gorgeous music?

I cannot possibly imagine what you're going through. A friend of mine is deaf and she always says that she'd prefer to be deaf than blind. I always disagree with her and tell her that I'd rather be blind than deaf. Fortunately we both pretty much get our wish..

Beethoven

Excerpts from a Letter, 1801:

"... Know that my noblest faculty, my hearing, has greatly deteriorated..."

"... How sad is my lot, I must avoid all things that are dear to me.."

"... Oh how happy I should be if my hearing were completely restored, then I would hurry to you...;"

"... Of course, I am resolved to rise above every obstacle, but how will it be possible? ..."

"... I beg of you to keep the matter of my deafness a profound secret to be confided to nobody, no matter whom.."

"... My hearing has grown steadily worse over the last three years, which was said to be caused by the condition of my belly..."

"... For two years I have avoided almost all social gatherings because it is impossible for me to say to people "I am deaf". If I belonged to any other profession it would be easier, but in my professsion it is a frightful state.."

"... It is curious that in conversation there are people who do not notice my condition at all; since I have generally been absent-minded, theey account for it in that way. Often I can scarcley hear someone speaking softly, the tones yes, but not the words. However, as soon as anyone shouts it becomes intolerable..."

Well, if there is any surgical procedure that would help, it would be the cochlear implants.

sorry to hear about that Dyre, had no idea about your hearing problems. I have to say that you must cope very well as you always seem a happy person on DH. Have to say i'm a bit weary about my hearing as my dad and my nan both have hearing problems (especially my nan) so i'm wondering if i'm next! (they were both about 30 when their hearing started to deteriorate).

Anyway theme songs
DH - Queen - We are the champions
Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot

Me - Lostprophets - 4:AM Forever
