the dummest thing i ever did.
i really should not have done this. First off i'd like to say since i did no one else will ever have to.... i am currently out of thermal paste so i decided to try some house hold things... first i tried cualk\ silicone mixture and it worked just like like the stock paste shipped with the card. I chose this substance because it doesnt dry hard it remains soft and pliable.so i think and read some more which leads me to...
then i try the caulk\silcone mixture with a small metal washer between the GPU and heat sink. I repeat the dummest thing ever immediatly with 90c temps on bootup i shut down and scrapped that immediatly then i try standard silicone.this stuff is a nighmare at first it was all good with reasonably low temps after letting it fully dry and set. but i noticed the temps did not stablelize they slowly rose. the silicone effectivly insulated the gpu. when i scrapped the slicone i noticed that it had cooked onto my GPU making it a rael pain to remove and clean. though websites might recommend usig silicone as an alternative NEVER USE SILICONE so after all that i reapplied the caulk silicone mixture professionaly making sure the entire surface of the heatsink is touching the GPU you know i have the same exact idle temps as i did before at 45c which could use some lowering i know. I dont recommend doing anything taht i stated in the previous article doing so could damage your card. the dummest thing ever. |

At least you learned something from it! My roommate removed the cooler from his 9800pro, looked at it, put it back on, and it was dead.

Dumb is removing your heatsink off your Geforce 2 Ultra, sticking it back in, and letting the heatsink cool down on the table :/. One nicely fried GF2U sitting in my desk currently.

Once I had (I think it was 1999 spring) this old pentium 133 that had small heatsink and fan. The fan was dead so I side of the case open and fan out and table fan to blow air in
worked well until I unpluged the power cable of the table fan

thanks guys i dont feel so lame. I'm glad to report my card is alive and healthy except for a hurt feeling or two. After the 90c idle temp i was definatly scared. But all thats a thing of the past now thanks to some good ol Arctic purchased at my local radioshack. Nerdrock how exactly does your roomates deathvision work? Hex, backslash what compelled you two to stickum figers in moving fan parts? yeouch. Whats a thouroughbred? we all learn from mistakes taht part of the beauty of life i guess. Oh and i've done plenty of dumb things maybe i should have stated the dummest thing i've done in awhile. like this one time when i went to band camp....

lucky you have a kind hearted employer its good you didnt lose your finger i had a bad accident once though involving a drill press which left me without feeling on the top of my left middle finger. I was back to work the next day. fingers are pretty fragile oh and as far as stupid car antics go when i was a very small child my mom left me in the car to go and see if someone was home when she turned around the car was rolling down the street....uh oh you no f$%k with fan,fan f$%k with you

One of the dumbest things anyone ever said: A guy once claimed his V4 saturn would beat my big block V8 pickup truck because he was driving a standard and he was lighter.
All laughed |

Is that so.... silly me, I've really lost touch with my mechanics. Trust me if you'd seen how crappy this guy drives a stick and how dinky the car is.... There's still no way he'd ever beat me even if he put Mario Andretti behind the wheel. Its a small crapily maintained economy 4 cylinder and I've got a much better vehicle than he did. It was a case of "had to be there". I still maintain no 4 cylinder would beat anything that powerful in a quarter mile, the torque just isn't there. Now when I get my 8.0L V10 Dodge SRT... that's a different story

so, there are little 4 banger engines out there that can, and in several cases, beat many different v8 engines out there

Yeah but I'm talking pickup truck vs. car, the car's tires and transmission are meant to go at higher top speeds... so in a longer race it'd do it but for acceleration torque is more important.
I just like the pickup trucks better because for north american driving top speed isn't as important as towing capacity and "throw 1/2 ton of sand back in there"-ability

well, i know what you mean about north american driving. here in southern califonia, every other vehicle you'll see will be a either a dodge 1500, chevy/gmc 1500, or Ford F-150
i raced a truck in my car once, i beat it both on launch and top speed. but my car didn't have a piston engine
