Judas,
In all honesty, you pretty much pointed out exactly why one should wait for just a few more months instead of spending the money now. Since Vista will likely be a good OS for the next 5-6-7 years or so, why would anyone with a decent performing system now want to spend money prematurely when the whole shebang is just around the corner? To borrow from you automobile analogy in another thread: It's like buying a new car today when next year's models are coming onto the lot in just a few weeks. The ONLY reason for getting that new car now is that prices may be lower....but you're still getting LAST YEAR'S model. The only reasons I can see for putting money out today is for something that's broken and needs replacing. There'll be plenty of good deals once Vista gets on the market. |

Well, from past experience the first generations of cards supporting a new DX usually isn't that powerful except on paper. Always has seemed a bit buggy in the beginning and games not fully supporting it fully for the first 6-12 month. In time when games are fully compatible with the new DX your first gen card already is obsolete. Thats just my opinion though...
And I sure as hell won't be switching over to Vista before atleast one service pack is released.

dyre, i would agree, but i simply make the statement and let them decide for themselves,
If they feel they must wait, they'll do so, if they feel they must have a computer now then so be it. They will make the dicision, not someone else (enless there idiots). I meerly make sure i present the options that would be available and make sure i build a machine that'll run both fluently. I need a car now, do i walk for the next few weeks or do i buy it now. Imo, i'd say that the computer is the engine, and the OS is the cars body, but that gets way to complicated even if it's to scale.

Sorry for bailing on the thread. Got very busy the last couple days, so I haven't been able to keep posting. I've seen a lot of different opinions so far, and it's been a good read.
Don't get me wrong, guys. There are reasons for and against waiting for Vista, or a DX10 card, but as some of you have mentioned it really depends on the inividual situation. I tend to give computer buying advice based on what someone has, what they intend to use it for, and how long they want to get out of it. Good to see that a good number of you guys do the same thing. Anwyays, I just wanted people to take notice of the fact that they were using "Wait for Vista/DX10" as a blanket piece of advice for almost every single question asked about upgrade/purchase advice. It can be very misleading, and confusing for some people, especially when you never give a reason for that advice. Hopefully some of you will consider that next time. BTW, a few things to consider when "waiting" for Vista or DX10: - Vista won't be available for retail purchase until Janurary 30th 2007, while OEMs will get it sooner. Even if you do wait for Vista you should also consider if you current system can handle it. Remember this moto: whatever Microsoft has spec'd to run Vista, double it, unless you enjoy slide shows. ![]() - Here's a question: Which version of Vista will you be buying? While Vista Home Basic will support gaming (or so they say), since only Vista Home Premium and up supports the fancy interface, the multimedia/entertainment tools, and what not, if you want to get the most out of your investment then your choices are pretty clear: Vista Home Premium for $240 US, Vista Business for $300 US, or Vista Ultimate for $400 US. And here's something to consider: Vista Beta is infact Vista Ultimate. So, if you want all that fancy stuff just like in the beta, then your choices are pretty limited. Keep that in mind when you decide. - As Sandok mentioned ATI will have their DX10 (R600) card sooner than I thought (thanks for pointing that out, btw), however every indication says late Decemeber.. maybe. This will be a full, built from the ground up, DX10 card. However, every indication shows that nVidias NV80 is not. It's infact built to be DX10 compatible. Think of it like a 7900 with DX10 tacked on. There is also mention that the NV80 got a bit delayed, and won't be out until after ATIs R600. Only time will tell. |

I recieve Vista Buisness for free through my work, but should i buy it my self, I would properly go for the Home Prem.
In my case the extra price for the Ultimate version, doesn't seem fair for: Shadow copy, remote desktop, p2p meeting place, web server, fax client, offline folders, secure startup, virtual pc and mui. Remote desktop, p2p, web server, fax client, offline folders is just not good enough "programs" since you can get alternatives which are just as good or better for free and virtual pc can be downloaded free anyway... btw. side by side comparison: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...7581&SiteID=17 |
