I've seen this before. The reasoning has something to do with people associating the number six with the word "karat", as in "6 karat gold". Personally, I think it would work better with one of the more common karats, like 12 or 24. The first time I did this test, I guessed potato.

It's more to do with speed I think, It tells you to think of a vegetable QUICK, How many of you actually named the vegetable aloud because you were saying six aloud? Carrot is by far one of the quickest words to say, rather than potato tomato cucumber horse radish etc.

that's the explanation my computer science teacher told me when he first did this to our class.

Also, 5-1 = 4
4-2 = 2
3-3 = 0

I read the thread before doing the quiz. Since I was biased, it totally screwed up my experience. Too bad, I was about to find out if I'm one of the regular people or maybe the chosen one

Actually, the second one is even easier to explain. Because of the nature of the number 9, everybody is going to end up with the same first letter.
