??? Classic Rock Albums

Hi there

I'm trying to get some good tastes of some of the best albums in Classic Rock
I've had my fill of single songs, I'm trying to experience the album as a complete body of work.

Can you guys give me some listening suggestions in the more powerful albums of Classic Rock?
The best of the best

So far, I've been suggested a few Pink Floyd albums by sinjin and BWX232 (Dark Side Of The Moon, Meddle, Division Bell; Animals)

I have already listened to:
The Wall (Pink Floyd) - thought it was a great work, liked almost all of it
Tommy and Quadrophenia (The Who) - ermm I liked bits, but I think The Who is not my cup of tea
Hotel California (Eagles) - I liked a couple songs, thought it was so-so
Boston (Boston) - Heh, I liked this, but I don't think there's much else by them that I'd like
I and II (Led Zeppelin) - I liked these a lot, they are truly a great band

. . . Now let's see how many Classic Rock fans there are here

It depends on what era of music you consider classic. I have a few that span many years, but consider all classics.

Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy
Bad Company, Bad Company
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle vol 1 and 2
Rush, Moving Pictures
The Cars, Heartbeat City
AC/DC, Back in Black
Metallica, Master of Puppets, the black album, And Justice for All
Deep Purple, Machine Head
Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall (rent The Wall movie and watch it while drunk or high. It will enlighten you)
Rolling Stones, Forty Licks
David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
Eric Clapton, Unplugged Live (after all these years a little mellow Clapton sounds nice)
The Beatles, The White Album

Hope something here appeals to you. There are so many more I could list but these are some of the best IMHO.

I'm not sure of what Classic Rock means, here's some of my favourite 70s

King Crimson, I'd say "Red" and "Starless", although my favorite from this period is "Larks' Tongues in Aspic"
Yes, "Close to the Edge", "Fragile"
Led Zeppelin, I-V
Gentle Giant - a prog band, "Three Friends", "Free Hand"
Deep Purple, "Fireball", "Made in Europe"
Jethro Tull, "Thick as a Brick", "A Passion Play"

to be continued (I'm still sleeping)

EDIT:
Van der Graaf Generator "Pawn Hearts", "Live Record", Godbluff", "Still Life"
Various Peter Hamill solo albums - PH7 and "Over" come to mind
Genesys - "Selling England ...", "The Lamb...", "Foxtrot"

Ah, what is it . . .

Here's one definition:
Quote:
Classic Rock is an umbrella term that basically describes the best (and most played ) work of white hard guitar rock bands from the 60s and 70s. We’re talking Cream, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, and the like.
Thanks for so many replies
I see some true aficionados

I know this is a little off subject but you should watch "The Wall" sometime you can now pickup the DVD for it and it's great. You haven't lived till you've watched it in 5.1!!!!

Users of Mozilla or its derivatives or web filters should use this link instead if you don't allow unrequested windows to be opened (like pop-up ads for example)

Otherwise you get a black screen with the floyd logo which disappears and nothing happens with nothing to click except for a link to the peeps that made the site.

Aside from that little problem, the site itself is really really good

Thanks Kinetic!

Did I saw thats a good site? It's AWESOME - so many good tunes that I haven't heard it years. Visit the site a few times and some different titles appear and some vanish - I think they've got pretty much everything they've done in small doses in there. Stay long enough and you could listen to everything! Maybe

Hmm, when you mentioned Who albums you didn't mention Who's Next. That has to be by far their best album - If you don't like that album, then it's definitely time to give up on them.

Heh, I happened to catch part of their countdown of "Greatest Rock n Roll Albums," and got a few ideas from there.
I'm gonna go check their site to see if they have the list up somewhere

Some excellent choices there gents!

I'm partial to any song/album ZZTop > but their 1st ( "Rio Grande Mud" ) with 'Waitin' on the bus'/'Jesus done left Chicago' is a fav album. (CD goes in now)

Clapton "416 Sunset Boulevard" > nice
Dave Mason w/the acoustical version of "All along the Watch Tower" (can't remember the album)
Santana "Abraxus"
Hmm, <old memories> there was a Ten Years After album I used to listen to over & over in the 70's. Danged if I can remember the name tho'. [Lucky I can remember mine ... growing up in the '70's!! ] Anyone remember Ten Years After & know what happened to 'em?
J. Geils Band albums too. (Ohh, my bad memory!)

I'm gonna go reminisce for a bit ... with a bud ...

ROCK & ROLL !!! another one

Come on, most of the '80s bands albums on the prior postings are now going on 15-20 years old. That definition should be rewritten to include at least to the mid '80s. Most classic rock stations that I listen to include most if not all of the bands listed music.

Oh, one more "classic rock" '80s album
Diver Down, Van Halen

I disagree Frodo, cuz most 80's rock albums have a significantly different feel to them than 70's, not to mention 60's . . . A few probably sound somewhat similar, but say you compare the arguably biggest rock bands of their eras [eg. Led Zeppelin & Van Halen] and the difference is quite noticeable. It's not an age designation, more of a style grouping . . . at least that's how I see it

Well, I can't argue about the sound difference. I guess to each his own. Now a for a real classic rock album that I think no one has listed that I like rather well:

Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland

Yes, well, all this categorizing sucks, it only applies to lower end epigonic bands imo. Hendrix... yeah, classic, Led Zeppelin too - how do you fit "Goin' to California" or "D'yer Maker" into "classic rock"... they're plain classics. Like the Rolling Stones - "Let It Bleed", "Sticky Fingers" - featuring Mick Taylor, also "Beggar's Banquet".

OK, I forgot... these are prog rock (another label)

Renaissance - "Scheherezade and Other Stories"
Gong - "Flying Teapot", "Angel's Egg", "You" (trilogy)

And folk rock, Fairport Convention "Liege and Lief"
