I've been talking to 2 fellows at work . . . They both think Part II of The Godfather is better than the first.
![]() The question I pose is: which film in The Godfather trilogy do you think is the best? Yes, I've included Part III, even though the main argument was between I and II (. . . and even though I've heard not many people liked it )EDIT by ToshiroOC: Spoiler Warning! Don't scroll down unless you've seen the movies... I, of course, liked the first Godfather film more than Part II. I'll try to be briefIn Part II, I felt that not much of great interest occurred, I kept waiting for major plot points to be revealed Also, there weren't many "big time" characters, like in the first. The first had huge mob bosses, and other dangerous individuals. I think the difference in the endings is a big contrast, too. In the first, you see the family simultaneously eliminate several major enemies, all intercut with the baptism. In Part II, you have only 3 deaths, and not as well executed cinematographically (imo) as the first. And look who died: Pentangeli? He just kills himself quietly. Fredo? He was a weak "dummy" anyway; not a big accomplishment killing him. Roth? Though he had some power, the film didn't show him to be as powerful or dangerous as the bosses from the first film. And compare the final shots of both films: The first shows a new Don being paid tribute as a door closes on his worried wife. Part II? Michael sitting in a chair, reminiscing. And overall, I thought Pacino gave a much more powerful performance in the first; you could just feel his presence burn on the screen in some scenes. The rest of the characters from the first, I felt, were more significant and more memorable. Also, of the family itself, the first showed a big powerful family, with much detail on many levels. In Part II, not much was shown of the family, but you get the impression that it is much smaller, less powerful, a little dull for me. Basically, I think the first film was more rich than Part II, in most ways. Well, which did you like most, and why? EDIT: everything I wrote, is not to say I don't like Part II. No, I like both films, but I do like the first more

I enjoyed all three but like most movies, apart from maybe Aliens, the first of a series is
always the best IMO

Watch Pacino very closely, esp in the first
when he kills the Governor of Pluto and invents the Internet, making billions from p0rn sites, then creates the potion to read people's minds,,,,, you'll see what a great actor he is

I've gone for part 2 as well...basically because i felt it built on part 1 very well, the DeNero flashbacks were excellent and in my opinion DeNiros 2nd best performance ever (2nd to Raging Bull)- I also thought Pacino's performance was better in the second where his character has changed completely from the one we see at the beginning of Part 1 as everything (family/business) falls apart around him.
