Things that are new arent ALWAYS better
Ok im going to go on a bit of a blackberry rant here, so if the subject bores you, then don't read
![]() For years I had an older blackberry model - the 7230 and I loved it. it could handle email very well, had a nice interface and a great little keyboard for remote emailing and texting. It wasn't flashy, had minimum ringtones but had a massive week long battery life under normal conditions and did all I needed (also had amazing sound quality, best ive experienced). So 12 weeks ago my phone provider vodafone contact me, offering a new funky colour version which I was reluctant to accept as I had seen newer models in stores and they had a standard phone style keyboard, not the full QWERTY job. Anyway the rep assured me, I could keep my old one and just remove the SIM, and this new model 8700g something had also a full qwerty keyboard, but had an array of lovely polophonic sounds as well as a razor sharp screen. Anyhow as it was free I accepted and in a few days it arrived to my door. Inital impressions were good, lovely screen and it was slighty smaller which should prove nice. Anyway a week later I began to notice how crap the sound quality was when speaking to people and I also hated the keyboard as it had a clicky feel to it and even though it was smaller it was fater/deeper so it would bulge out more attached to my belt. As I have reasonably large hands, I found myself hitting the wrong keys so it was slowing me up also. Anyway I went away last month to ATI HQ in berlin for a briefing and took the phone with me so I could remotely stay in touch with people and get my emails - and after a 1 hour conversation with someone from home, I disconnected to see 2 of the bars had vanished ! 1 day later the battery was dead, and as I thought the phone would last the 3 days I was there I was basically f*&ked as I didnt bring the charger. Anyway I got home, and another few weeks passed using this and I was beginning to hate it. the keyboard sucked, it would sometimes come up with "data connection refused" meaning you had to reboot to get back to GPRS and receive emails. battery life was 2 days without calls and I hated the polophonic rings. I wanted my simple damn phone sound again. Also i found with the new one it would keep asking for enterprise activation and put a new icon the main window. Heading over to support forums, I found thousands of people with the same crap...... so hey, at least im not an idiot, the phone just sucks. So last night I found my older blackberry and charged it, transferred the sim back over, and i had actually forgotten how good it was. I even went onto ebay and picked another one up for cheap as this one has had 3 years of abuse travelling the world. Just in case in a years time you cant find them anywhere. Sure it doesnt have a colour screen, it is a bit slower, but the functional things like the keyboard, battery life and sound quality are much superior. So moral of the story, if you have something you love, dont just bin it cause a new model is out. the one I love. (below) ![]() and the one that sucks (below). ![]() trust me, looks are deceiving. |

That's a bummer... My dad has a slightly older blackberry (but not as old as yours
) and while it many not have a megapixel camera or anything like the latest BlackBerries, it still is quite good.Oh well, this isn't the first time that newer stuff can suck

yeah the 7230 is old but it has yet to be bettered IMO for the functional important stuff. the new ones SUCK. the build quality is crap too. I mean does anyone use MP3 playback, a built in shit camera or half the nonsense that comes with phones?
how about manufacturers concentrate on the PHONE side of things, like quality etc rather than dumbass battery sucking gimmicks that little school girls need when they text their mates. sad. |

Two of my friends have new blackberries. They are not the same as yours, more phone-shaped but with the double-key QWERTY keyboard. They love it.

i'm waiting on the treo 700 series with GSM ... then find a go deal online. i hate blackberrys and scrolling through the thumbwheel. and paying that fee when i dont need the blackberry email. i do need wifi and an organizer, and hell why not put that in my phone with a QWERTY keyboard and stylus and windows mobile!

anyway I've never been fond of blackberries but i used my uncle's older one earlier and its GREAT. I mean I dont think I need to be connected like that but it was fantastic. I'd much prefer a treo but thats cause my personal tastes lean towards the palm OS. Anyway I like all the crazy gadgets on cellphones so i always get the mp3\movie player\crazy camera phone cellphones. My friend and I have even imported a few from japan and then after a year or so sold them to people out here (after a few years they're STILL better than our crap) for a profit.

nah nah and i wasnt saying you should change phones. You should find a phone that works for you and use it (which you have)
I'm just a gadget freak so I buy lots of different phones. I don't personally like blackberries but it has to do with the mentality behind them (at least around here) rather than the actual technology. plus I'm more familliar with Palm. Anyway good idea grabbing several off ebay. you should grab some extra batteries too. Those are usually the first thing to go on a cellphone in my experience.

I just want a good solid phone that is mostly waterproof & works with GSM in the 1900 MHZ band. Peole are trashing phones all the time because they drop em in the toliet or shower/bath tub. I personally want one for hiking & cross country running (dropped mine in a creek once or twice) but there are only a couple out there right now. I'm with Gemini on the whole I don't need to be that connected thing. Just a good solid phone that I can get calls & maybe do a tm now & again.

My wife has the new blackberry (company phone) and she hates it. She is not very tech savvy to begin with and this thing is not intuitive at all. The battery also has a short life.
What she needs is a Star Trek communicator. Flip it open and start talking, if it cuts out, tap it a few times. |
