does noise canceling hurt your ears?

so I've been considering getting some noise canceling headphones but heres the deal. I heard alot about them and how they work...

(for anyone whos curios go here http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-noise-cancellation.htm)

my issue is that i dont think they actually eliminate the sound...they just send out another sound to make it seem like theres no sound. you only perceive that the sound is gone.

Does this still hurt your ears? I mean ultra high-pitched noise can still damage eardrums even if you cant perceive the sound.

does anyone know?

ok gemini do you know much about the physics of sound? i'll try to explain it briefly
when a wave encounters another wave of equal magnitude (loudness), but opposite phase - the end result is no wave at all

that's pretty much the theory behind noise cancellation - though it's not 100% efficient, it is actually reducing noise, so it shouldn't cause ear damage

here's some imagery to help explain
say this image is the ambient noise

the headphones detect this, and produce a waveform like this

when put together
+ =

but again, it's not 100% efficient. Probably more like 40-50%

well my physics is spotty (been a few years) but I thought it was like that. Still I wanted to make sure. I think Im going to buy some now. After using them recently it was AMAZING! I set the volume to half what i normally set it at. I imagined it saving my ears quite a bit of trauma (even with no music, walking to school is HORRIBLE for my ears)

LHC is on a distinguished road

I got myself a pair of Creative earbuds for about $30.. they go right into your ear, so they do a fair job of cancelling noise just from being so far into your ear
