Torrent client suggestions

Never used BitTorrent before but I've been looking at it lately. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best or most user friendly client?

I'd get Utorrent version 1.6 Final - I would not use any of the patches beyond that 1.6 Final release, since it was purchased and is being coded by someone different.

On this site, it's called 1.6 version 474:

Download uTorrent 1.6 Build 474 - filehippo.com

Not sure why, but that is the FINAL version I have downloaded also.

hmm...weird, I've tried utorrent and didn't like it. So, I've been using Azureus for a couple of years now. Always had a really good experience with that software.

Utorrent 1.6 b474 uses so much less in terms of resources, it's just amazing.

Plus, it has a Speed Guide wizard that helps you optimize settings for your config.

Once you specify a port and forward that port in your router, you should be good to go after you run Speed Guide.

I think Azureus is slow, clunky and buggy by comparison. Silly non-compiled Java stuff.

no doubt that azerues is an awesome client, many things are alike in utorrent. Utorrent only uses 6mb of ram, thats the difference, maybe you should try build 1.6?

Thanks for the responses guys. Now just to do some readng & figuring out of the whole "torrent thing". I've been a bad geek guy for a long time now & not paid any attention to torrents other than the amusing news story about pirate bay.
Time for some catching up!

I already have java installed so that part really doesn't matter. I've never come across a bug or found it "clunky". I have optimized Azureus in terms of speed. With port forwarding Azureus does that automatically for me. Depending on how well the file is being seeded I can get full download speed (900KB/s).

But again I am basing my experiences from years ago. I may have to go reinvestigate what I have been using.

Azureus is getting into the distro biz - Zudeo.

I swear - I went from Azureus to Bit Spirit (still a good app) to Utorrent, and Utorrent 1.6 b474 just gets it done. Lean, clean torrent machine.

Bit Torrent is what it is called and the name of the original client.

Utorrent is a much leaner, cleaner, more optimized program.

The original creator of the Bit Torrent app is the one who purchased Utorrent outright because it was better than his own original app.

BitLord BitLord - The Ultimate Torrent Downloader easy to use, working great. My favourite so far.
If you download only say 1 file every few weeks/months, then you can use Opera. Though Bitlord is small and simple enough.

imo.. the best is strickly straight BitTorrent. I doesn't have any garbage included with it, work great.

Just make sure your port you specify (or use the default if you want) is open for your router's port forwarding... And adjust your upload/download rates accordingly to what you want.

And just a FYI, it may not be wise to allow more then 5 torrents download at the same time, this can cause some serious networking/internet connectivity issues.

yeah i slid my upload slider to 131mb/s and about 5 minutes later, i couldn't figure out why DH and other sites were taking a full 2 minutes to load. Low and behold, i had over 500 connections, most of them i was uploading to, and nearly every ounce of upload bandwidth was being sucked dry... a few were pulling at over 500kb/s, damn they musta been loven that.

If you get utorrent, get the latest version, previous (non-beta) builds have a serious security issue.

The new versions are "compromised". 1.6 Final (474) is the last trusted one.

AFAIK, no. Make sure you download it from the main site and not elsewhere.
I run frequent ad aware checks and the only that I find is tracking cookies in the rare cases I use IE.

I give my vote to utorrent as well. So small, but very full featured.

How wacky is this - they have screen shots showing their own ad for the Pro version on their site:

Silly geeks.

I guess it's technically adware, but only cause they want you to upgrade to the Pro version of the same software. I guess that's not so bad.

As a general rule, I try to limit my Upload speed to 80% of my allowable rate.

I have ADSL at 1.5m/384k and in Utorrent 1.6, under the Preferences > Connection > Bandwidth Limiting area, I have Global maximum upload rate (kB/s): set to a value of 30. I have Alternate upload rate unchecked and Global maximum download rate set to 0 (unlimited).

Under Preferences > BitTorrent > Number of Connections, I have:

Global maximum number of connections: 200
Maximum number of conected peers per torrent: 50
Number of upload slots per torrent: 4

and the Use additional upload slots if upload speed < 90% checked.

Under Preferences > Queueing > Queue Settings I have:

Maximum number of active torrents (upload or download): 8
Maximum number of active downloads: 5

I make sure the port in my software (like 32844) is the same port forwarded in my Linksys router. If my torrent machine is 182.188.13.5, I enter that number in the router forwarding table and enter 32844 to 32844 in the EXT PORT columns and check both TCP and UDP and of course have the Enable box checked.

So, with my 1.5m, I routinely get 150-180k download speeds, and of course, upload is limited to 30k, and it all seems to work out fine, especially if I use the machine with the Dual Core in it. Dual Core seems to mean very little impact even when I'm gaming.

How so? I mean, I didn't like the takeover by bittorrent either, but are there actually any problems yet with the actual code for the newer versions?

LOL, well if "you" consider that a reason to classify this program as adware infected, then ok it is lol.
I have nothing but good things to say about it though.
