Precisely, all the england players are paid for now is to jog around the pitch and over-dramatically fall on the floor and start rolling around in supposed agony when a player comes within 2 feet of em.
I seriously doubt that the squad in its current state will get anywhere near rebounding.
Cut the salaries and get em playing properly, or at least send em to drama school so they actually look like they're in pain

I think I read recently that now the average salary for the premier league is at 1mil GBP? or euros.

Anyway, from day one I said I don't like him. The guy has a loser attitude and is not the right man for the job.

At least Sven had decades of experience from the Italian league on how to make primadonnas play some ball. Hats off for N.Ireland who almost made it.

But what kept N. Ireland from making it? Even when you have talent, determination, loyalty and passion it still wont get you the win. Should there be realistic salary caps and if so, would that ensure that the whole team contributes to the win, rather than a few well paid men, and fewer posers.

The Professional Footballers Association and Independent newspaper jointly research the average wage every few years. The last time was published in April 2006.

Quote:
The average basic salary of a footballer in the English Premiership is £676,000 a year, or £13,000 per week, according to an exclusive survey of professional players by The Independent. That figure typically rises by between 60 and 100 per cent when performance-related bonuses, including for actually playing, are added.
So we are saying the average, run-of-the-mill type of player in the premiership earned a minimum of £1,000,000 during the season 2005-2006. The top playes earn a hell of a lot more.

John Terry of Chelsea FC signed a contract in July 2007 worth £135,000 per week, that's over £7,000,000 annually. More than the GDP of many developing countries.

I for one who was pleased to see McClaren removed from the position. It's been a very long time since england had played with some quality. This was never apparent during his reign as head coach. He should of stayed at club level.

After last nights match which so poor (Yes im disappointed about not reaching the euro finals next year) but after a little thought, i am pleased we have failed to qulify. just to save even more embarrassment.

Im sorry to say that Peter Crouch (who can't play football imo ) was probably one of the better players on our side and thats saying something.

Also it was the wrong time to bring on a first cap goalkeeper (scot carson) to make his debut in such a important match

It's about time the footballers should stop being paid so highly just to look worse than the average amateur footballer. This for me is the reason the is no pride in english football anymore.

As mentioned above about N.I run in the tournamant... very good try indeed from a small country.Im sure we would of lost against them also.

They need the money for for early retirement !

England missing the main tournament was a bit of a surprise, but it might be just what they needed; a lesson learned. Maybe the new coach can make something of the abundance of talent that actually exist in many of your players. Me personally think that someone like Mourinho, Sir Alex or even Wenger could make quite a difference...

Mourinho's already said he has no intention of the position..Pitty he would make a difference i think.

I think it's time we had a more aggressive manager (like Mourinho) instead of the usual we have had in recent years..(excluding sven)

when you look at Scotlands group, and the players available to us, and compare that was what England was faced with.....
I personally think that half the problem is that, as a nation in general, England are severley lacking in national pride. and that's been reflected by those over paid ponces who just never showed their stones throughout the whole campaign.
and incedently, I agree with mig, crouch is pish, and yet he was easily the best player on the night. something wrong there

You think so? In my years in the UK, England and Wales, the english people did not look to me lacking national pride. Over P.C. if nothing else. BUT, a major flaw in my opinion is how many many english believe(-d?) that english football is the best or close to that. Or that in every international competition England is always one of the contenders that have the best chances winning the cup.
I have no question that the english teams in the premiership and the english players are among the best in the world, but the national team is another matter.
Many people need to put their feet on the ground, and I hope for England's sake that this will be achieved with this not surprising turn of events.

The problem with having people that earn several millions playing for the national team is that they have nothing to prove, or in simpler terms, nothing to gain out of it.
A player that is average to good and wants to be seen to earn a good contract will play far better than a player that even if has better attributes he has a XX million contract and is 100% satisfied with it.

On the other hand, if a coach decides to do any such thing then every shit newspaper in the UK and the millions that buy them will not stop bitching about not including the mega star etc.
You dig your own grave.

i agree about the teams, but most of the really good teams are full of non english players! - this is the crux of the problem, look at arsenal. I think the english players generally lack fire and passion. I think they need another Alan Shearer.

Bit off topic but...

WOMAN'S DIARY:

Saturday 17th November 2007

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely. I had been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and I did turn up a bit late so thought it might be that.
The bar was really crowded and loud so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk. He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we go somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn't seem himself; he hardly laughed and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was saying. I just knew that something was wrong.
He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in; he hesitated but followed.

I asked him again if there was something the matter but he just half shook his head and turned the television on.

After about 10 minutes of silence, I said I was going upstairs to bed.

I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him deeply. He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile. He didn't follow me up but later he did, and I was surprised when we made love. He still seemed distant and a bit cold, and I started to think that he was going to leave me and that he had found someone else.
I cried myself to sleep.

MAN'S DIARY:

Saturday 17th November 2007

Scotland lost to Italy . Gutted. Got a shag though.

Well Jose isnt going to turn down a chance at a club and take a national seat. I wonder who will step up to the plate. I know the team can idle now but there are big changes coming, there has to be. Maybe some of the players can go to Hollywood like David B and his wife and fall and grab their ankles there, sureliy they would make more money doing that there.

Yes they probably would make a ton of money but it has been a terrible move for Beckham. The team he is with is rubbish and its basically a money making/profile enhancing scheme for his wife. Posh is a smart woman but she is certainly not the best person for beckham.

Beckham and his ilk are perhaps the new footy elite, anything that negatively affects the game and any league changes is a disaster for the great marketing machine that provides products for everyone and almost every game, including Rugby which nobody cares about until they are disappointed with footy..LOL

England have dropped one place to 12th in the FIFA rankings. This means at the 2010 World Cup Draw this weekend they won't be in the first group of seeds. Greece are 13th, Scotland are 14th, USA 19th, Sweden 24th, Denmark 31st. This should cover everyone who has contributed to this thread.

Does anyone on DH come from Argentina who are ranked number 1?

Greece is 9th with one (yes one) point more than England, England is 10th. Greece has 1114 points and England 1113.
That means that up to and including Greece, the teams will be in the first group.
Most english fans don't seem to take much notice in this for some reason. Of course if England finaly decides to play as they can, it won't matter that much when the time comes.

The Brits have to re-invent the team and find a manager that needs a chance to prove themselves. I mean its like a made for TV movie really in the making. All England needs is the desire to rise from the ashes, so to speak, but then they have time dont they?

At the BBC's 606 there were some stupid comments again. How easy it is going to be for England and "revenge" and that. If the players of England go with that attitude I see another failure.
Stop being so cocky.
