So I failed my road test
I don't care that much since I don't go anywhere, but it really was crap..
I did everything perfectly, parallel parking, K-turn, all that. So when I was finished he told me to like, park on the side, and I did. There he's like, "Okay, you gotta come back." and I'm like, "I failed?" and he's like, "Yea, you went right through 3 stop signs." So I said, "I thought I stopped at them.." and he's like, "You did. But you looked both ways while you were rolling to the stop. You did not look both ways WHEN you were stopped." So then he storms out of the car and like releases all this anger out on his fellow DMV person. He's just like, "AnOTHER one that failed because of stop signs. What is it with these kids? This test is such a joke and they can't even pass it. They shouldn't be on the road." I really just wanted to say to him, "So you're saying that out on the real road you don't look while rolling?" But meh, whatever So I go back on January 4th *shrug*

That's nasty. But you really need to look to the directions, since you never know is there other traffic coming your way. I passed my test in the first try only problem was that I didn't turn when the instructor said me to since I thought that I saw no motor vehicles sing on the road where I was ordered to turn. I'm glad that it isn't fatal mistake

Its really not about "real life" driving (though honestly I agree with the instructor), its about doing what is expected of you to pass the test. They really just want to see two things, you can control the car, and that you respect the road.
You'll get it next time.

Why wouldn't you look after the car was stopped? It doesn't make any sense. You are there, you are not doing anything, why not look ? lol
I agree with the instructor.

Yea I'm starting to see where he's coming from.. I'd probably be more understanding of how he looked at it if he didn't go on a pissy tantrum about it

Can't blame you there, it doesn't appear terribly professional.

Don't worry too much about it. I think there is a rule that the DMV can't pass anyone the first try out. Don't think I know anyone that has.
And what's a K-turn? I know a U-turn and a Y-turn but not a K-turn.

You should do the looking when you area stopped since then you can better see the traffic and react to it. Lets say that you stop at the sing and you don't look around and then you start moving and then you look left and right and you see huge truck coming from right and you hit the brakes but the truck hit your cars front sending it to spin and then the rear end hits the trailer and you can imagine the rest.

I passed my driving test on the first try, only had a few points shaved off for going too slow during part of the maneuvering, but I wasn't gonna complain. I'm sure you will pass your test next time

In America if you have fewer than three traffic cones in the grill you pass.

In America an alley is more wide than a highway in Europe.

I learned the hard way that driving is a privilege, and it can be taken away if you do something stupid, like wreck a car, drive selfishly, or carelessly, etc. I hope you learn to be fast when you need to be, slow when it makes sense, cautious when it will keep you alive and smart about why your driving anyway. Remember, when your in an asshole contest on the streets or highways, let the other guy win, it isnt about who is faster, who is bigger or who has the flash car, its about arriving alive. Take your time and learn to be a safe driver not an idiot.

You are to come to a complete stop and then make sure you can execute your next manuever safely... In the shortest possible time possible within reason.
Depending on the circumstances, and visibility, this rule is typically set in stone for urban areas... and even in some of the urban areas, depending on how soon you were making sure the cost was clear before making the stop, IF visibility allows for it and the judgement is acceptable, you can stop and continue... EVEN continue while double checking.... I wouldn't be all that concerned... I failed twice due to incompitent instructors... 3 of which ALL disagreed on the method of executing a proper turn... which seriously is a frigen STUPID as beyond all reason to make a fuss and dock points... I mean if i were turning into oncoming traffic, or skipping proper turning lanes or i don't know, what the hell else. Just some pricks you were bound to run into. I know some instructors would pass someone that failed almost if not everything they were saposed to do.. it happens, it shouldn't be it all depends on the human condition at work at the time. (job security in some proffesions is such a nasty thing) Out in the country, it's not very uncommon for even cops to do a rolling stop, hell i've seen people YEILD while blowing through a stop sign @ 140KM/H (87MPH).... Sometimes there are stop signs in the absalute rediculious of places.. While i would suggest trying to prevent bad habits, there are lines where they are completely inappropriate for the application, place, and time. oh and one thing.. there is such thing as Overly Defenseive driving and Overly offensive... in the same aspect of the spectrum... under defensive and under offensive driving can also be equaly as horrible..... And i know this first hand.... Not my fault, my mothers.... So incredibly defenceive, our entire family has nearly been killed by her more times that i can cound on both my hands.... Also one reason she's been in a few nasty accidents..... (or caused) finally, Depending on the ditches or roads around there, i don't know, but out here, the Ditch is sometimes the safest place you could possibly go in a situation in which you may thing you have no options...... it's better to have to get towed out of a ditch or pull the grass out of the grill then to end up dead or end up killing someone in the process of either someone elses mistake or your own on the road.

My first driving lesson was when I was twelve on an Allis Chalmers tractor towing a hay wagon all the way into Livingston Montana from the railroad station. It was a traumatic experience, what with lorries and cars trying to pass all the time. Driving is damn dangerous.

if i could, i'd get into auto racing. amateur or professional.
back when i had my mazda, i would go the illegal street races. it was fun, and i had my kicks and all. but, there were too many incidents where people got hurt because of dumb driving, or had their cars impounded/taken away at a sting. thankfully, i was never a victim of either of those. it was the mountains that took my car

Looking before you stop is just general awareness, if "Stop" requres stop then look, that that is what you have to do, and if Stop requires a certain pause even if there is not a single scrap of traffic....
You learn to pass the test, then you learn to really drive. Case in point is the old chestnut of a headlamp flash (taking UK highway code here) and the "correct" answer of its meaning, against the practical ones which can be contradictory, though the context is usually clear.

Instructors as a rule their are many are arsehats looking for any reason
what so ever to fail you! Even trying to get you to tripped up on purpose! Fully knowing your nervous.. why I dunno My 1st drivers test I failed due to the asshat. After going to a 4 way stop with no traffic. Turning right as he had instructed. He like 30 seconds later was all like did you stop at that stop sign (the one at the 4 way) dazed off I guess? anyways not why he failed me. This arse kept giving instructions way in advance and expecting me to remember them. Saying something like go down 3 lights and turn left. Then when I was setting there stopped at the light with my turn signal on. he said busting out in a angry upset tone I wanted you to turn right. I made the mistake of then switching my turn signal to the right... and looked to see if I could get over to go right. I couldn't so I turned off my signal and we looped around the block to get going where he wanted us to go at the next intersection. But his reason for failing me was that since I turned on my signal the other way it showed "intent", he though it showing I was going to turn right across a lane of traffic or something retareded I'm like WTF. second time I took the test diffrent instutor and of course passed. keep in mind i'd been driveing for a YEAR, and knew how to drive very very well... so the 1st guy was just an arse

Yea, my dad told me one time he noticed this REALLY dick thing a DMV employee did to this girl. She was waiting in the line of cars to take her road test, and she was next, so the DMV guy walked up to her car and was like "Ok, just roll on up a couple of feet to the line, I'll be with you shortly." The girl, obeying the instructor, did so, and he immediately failed her. Why? Because she drove a vehicle without a licensed driver within the car. That's sad
