Climber amputates arm to free self

MOAB, Utah, May 2 — Pinned by a boulder for five days and having run out of water, a climber amputated his own arm with a pocket knife, rappelled down a cliff and walked until rescuers found him.

This fellow was an expert I understand, and took some risks, like we all do, just getting into our cars everyday, but this guy put himself into that position, I pity him in some respects, I see amputees in my clinic frequently, no climbers, but lots of motorcyclists for sure, I make the prosthesis for the arms and feet, and often have to hear some interesting stories, most are sad with lots of regrets. I hope the fellow can get back to climbing again....(sounds crazy right?)

I had an old injury to my right hand when I was in the service, burned my flesh and tendons, when some twit tried to modify a claymore (mine) when I was stationed in Fallon Nv. I ignored it, because we were down range, and at the time (I knew everything, ha ha). When I retired, went back to med school and I couldn't hold a pair of needle drivers, numbness and tingling then loss of function in my right hand, after about two posts I just can't type well, (use lots of color) and editing takes awhile too, ha ha...anyway...
I work in an Orthopaedic clinic and the Emergency room, I see the bad ortho cases with an orthopaedic surgeon, and we make them limbs to walk with, and prosthesis to allow people to rehabilitate. I use fiberglass, teflon, plaster, plastic, etc, even metal occasionally...I enjoy it but it's tough...
I heard about the fellow with the bad hand the other day, sad, but he isn't the only one. I see people that inadvertently wrap rapelling lines around their arms and legs and strip the flesh off and tear away vital structures that allow them to function normally.
I feel for this fellow with the amputation, but it actually occurs frequently, sad and true....I try not to get emotionally involved with the patients problem, but alot of them are young professionals with futures, and it all ends there. I work with the physical therapist as well....I hope this fellow can get good care and a device that articulates enough to hold a rope, I can make one out of metal like aluminum, with little locking devices he can control with his teeth........but I digress.....yes I work in a clinic. ha ha....sorry.

Amazing story! There was a similar story in the U.K press a few years ago where this farmer had trapped his arm in a baling machine. He had the same decision to make and ended up cutting off his own arm and carrying it to the nearest farmhouse! It's amazing what the human body can withstand in extreme conditions.

Actually, a similar incident happened 10yrs ago, I believe. If my memory serves me correct, a tree fell on a hunter's leg, pinning him, he was stuck there for quite a while too. He also had to use a pocketknife (Swiss Army, I believe) to cut he's leg-off. He then was able to crawl to help.
