George Carlin, who died of heart failure Sunday at 71, leaves behind not only a series of memorable routines, but a legal legacy: His most celebrated monologue, a frantic, informed riff on those infamous seven words, led to a Supreme Court decision on broadcasting offensive language.

I am old enough to remember him on television on Johnny Carson's tonight show, he stood up for 10 minutes and said nothing in protest to the sensor on the show telling him what he could not say on the televsion I believe. It was an awkward moment for comedy everywhere.

I watched him as a kid in Shining Town Station, what a great show.

He will be remembered as a great person.

He's probably my favorite comedian, this really sucks

I did notice his health looking much worse in his last HBO special, I guess his early life of drugs caught up with him. I wish we had him around for just a few more years there's no one that can keep up with his style.

His insightful comedy on the foibles of human behavior, language, and ingrained ways of thinking will be missed greatly. He was such a smart comic! Really made me think about where and why I put my "stuff" where I do.

You could always tell, throughout his whole career, that he thought we ought not to take ourselves or others so literally, or seriously. He was also a big part of the beginning of the cable TV industry. His comedy specials, along with the movies of the time, were critical to the success of HBO in the beginning.

I am allowed to not respect him. He made little contributions to society that improved it. More like pushed it down the slope its going now (which is absolute sh*t)

If you want to thank him for the way TV is and the things that are allowed on it now and the way religion is treated now as unpopular and useless then go ahead. But I plan to have kids eventually and I won't support something or someone who wanted to trash the world.

You're very out of touch with reality if you think George Carlin is somehow responsible for the decline of society. Carlin was no Chomsky but his knack for making use of language and making us laugh at how stupid we are was downright brilliant. His mockery of religion simply continues this style and as you well know religion provides endless material for a comedian.

If that upsets you, then by all means stick your head in the clouds and make some babies.

See you're allowed to have any opinion, but must you abuse that by expressing your opinion in such poor taste? This is a thread for people who want to express their rememberance of him, not for people who didn't like him or have no respect for him. If you've got no respect for him why bother posting in a thread about him?

Not quite, though H3X4D3C1M4L does have a good point.

Though nothing Carlin has said has upset me in anyway, it is cheap comedy. Like you said, its there for everyone to make fun of.

As it stands. Still no respect for him or that type of comedy.

I only stated my opinion originally and then was attacked for it so I was merely defending my opinion. I have no interest in this thread or George Carlin so I leave you two to mourn him.
