I want to punch him.
You don't still use a screen saver, do you? : Yahoo! Green
Why do these people make more money than I do?

You want to punch him because it's obvious, or because he's naive to think everyone has a LCD?

And for the next article, a new revelation: in order to cut the emission of CO2, when you're not at work, your computer should be off, off, off!

What if my computer equipment is all solar powered? Am I still emitting CO2?

Really? I've heard and read what he wrote several times (from tech savy sources). So what happens? Crystals get stuck in some position?
Anyway, turning your stuff off when you're not using it is an ok idea, but writing articles and and running campaigns (solely) dedicated to making people put monitors to standby instead of using screensavers makes me think that someone has too much time on one's hands.

They don't suffer burn in, just image persistance... I'd love to know which Monkey coined that phrase when writing his marketing campaign for LCD's. No MORE BURN IN! yea right, I have a loverly black halo across the top of my monitor from my vista windows and a drop shadow at the bottom from the taskbar

exactly.. i've seen lcds that "burn in" they just don't appear as bad.. and typically don't happen often at all. Usually the ones i see do this are lower quality budget models...

CRT's are hilarious with burn ins, though.
All of the monitors at my school have the login screen forever with them.

Anyone seen a screensaver that acts by putting the screen in powersaving mode, that works with Vista? I'm using the basic Blank that I typically activate through the keyboard. but remember there being some screensaver years ago that forced actual powersaving mode. I can't just set the power saving setting to a low number of minutes because then Vista turns off the monitor even while playing video.

Shouldn't happen if you're using the right media player. WMP and new versions of MPC are both good for that.

The technical term for the "burn in" effect on LCDs is "Pixel Persistence" (or Image Persistence as craig noted), and I have it with my (when I bought it) $600 Viewsonic VP191b. It started happening within the last year, but mind you this monitor is going on 5 years old now. You can clean it out by filling your screen with a completely white image, and turning down the contrast and brightness. Just leave it for a while, and the pixels should reset, or turn off the monitor for a few hours will help too. It will, of course, come back, and over time the pixels will do this persistence thing a little quicker.
4 things I have noticed: 1) it doesn't matter whether you use DVI or D-Sub/VGA, it will still happen, and the image will still be there whether you switch from one to the other, 2) do not use a high contrast, sharp wallpaper, 3) do not set your monitors contrast and brightness too high, and 4) screen savers DO NOT help to prevent this, so technically the author was right about something.. indirectly. However, rather than turning your monitor off all the time (kinda stupid to turn your monitor off, get up for 10 mins or so just to come back and have to turn your monitor on again) is to set the power option in Windows to turn off the monitor after a set time. This way no image is being sent to the monitor, and the pixels are off the entire time. Anyways, in a couple days I'll be buying a new Samsung 2253BW, so it won't be bothering me much anymore, and I'll probably take this Viewsonic to the store to use at one of the work benches. Even though this has started happening over the last year it's been a damn good monitor. Definitly worth every penny I paid for it.

i've actually gotten into a habit of doing this almsot every time i leave my studio - so i've got no issues there - does make sense on a power consumption/"green" point of view - but then my power hungry 8core machine probably negates that benefit...

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of image persistence left (deleted), but here is something equaly as nice on my monitor (before LG replaced it under warranty) And yes, it was LCD.

Oh man, if you guys want a picture of pixel persistence, I'll be more than glad to post a few. All I have to do is play a game of GTAIV for 30 mins on this monitor, and I'll be able to show you guys a nice big circle on the bottom left corner of my screen.
That is unless you guys want some pixel persisted porn instead.
