Hello everyone, thank you very much for the congratulations!
I feel DAMN lucky to be the one to receive an excellent "toy" produced by AMD. I like these kinds of toys.
When I receive it, I will inform you guys

Btw, my english is written from a norwegian head, so I apologize for any typos.

Hehe, I hope my entry to the contest reflected that, because I'm not always quite sane, rather insane
I'm a bit new on DH-forums, but I love the reviews and articles.
And yeah, I will post pictures when I receive the card, so you don't have to mark me on your "disliked-people-who-win-hardware-and-dont-post-pictures-when-they-get-them"-list.

But FYI: my webcam is more regular than me, and my mobilecam is a piece of worthless ...

THANK YOU DriverHeaven and ATI,
I appreciate the reward for my weird imagination/creativity.
The 4850 will be in good hands

PART 1: What's this lil' something on the door?

PART 1
(Please excuse the picture quality, it seems like my mobilecam is better than my webcam, so in the future I will use the mobile.)

Hi everyone!
Yesterday, when I came home from work,
I received a FedEx package on the door, and I thought:
"Hmm, could it be ...?"

When I opened the package, and out came a VisionTek ATI Raedon HD 4850 wrapped up in a nice pack!!
I also included a picture of the specifications that the box says that my card has.

I hurried opening it, and took a look inside the nice black pack.
Too bad there was no driver-CD or manuals with this evaluation sample,
but that wasn't a problem because we can always use internet!

I took a look under the cardboard, and found the cables:
DVI to HDMI and VGA, HDTV-output and a Crossfire bridge.
Here are some pictures of the actual ATI Radeon 4850:

As you might see on the backside of this card, there is a white sticker that says "Evaluation Sample",
so I've included a very small evaluation in Part 3 of this thread!
You may also see that this card includes two DVI-outputs, and one HDTV output.

Continue to the next post (part 2) ->

PS: Please tell me if I included too many pictures, I really couldn't handle myself :/

PART 2: Installing the HD 4850

PART 2

Well, now it's time for the installation of the VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4850 into my Lian Li PC7BSCAND case.
I currently use a XFX Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT with a Zalman VF900-Cu fan.

First of all we got to uninstall the old Nvidia 7600 GT, and when I say old,
I mean about 2-3 years old! The 7600 GT will find it place in another
PC (server?), or I might sell it.

We may also compare the sizes of these two cards.
As you can see, they produced a lot smaller cards before,
but the ATI 4850 is not a big card compared to the really big ones out there!

Here I've taken a picture after fully installing the card into the PCI Express x16. I thought it as a good idea to move my Creative XtremeMusic soundcard to a PCI slot further down. This was because of the heat exposure that the card might cause, but mostly because I would like to install a new, big VGA cooler to the 4850 in the future.

This is the finish of ATI Radeon HD 4850 installation with some close-up pictures:

Now we are pretty close to booting up the computer, everything seems like
it's plugged okey, I remembered the PCI-E 6-pin power connector and I've
replugged every cable to the rear of my computer. Ready to go!

Continue to the final post (part 3) ->

PS: Please tell me if I included too many pictures, I really couldn't handle myself :/

PART 3: Evaluation and final thoughts

PART 3

Drivers:
I considered using the OmegaDrivers for ATI, but I figured out that my card wasn't
supported by the current Omega drivers. Therefore, I installed the standard
Catalyst drivers, or rather the hotfix-catalyst-drivers, because this driver
fixes some stability and performance problems about the card
(I think it was something about the fan speed or something).

I also tried ATI Tray Tools, and I really liked the game profile feature,
though this is something Nvidia always have offered, but not ATI.
Even though I liked ATT, I uninstalled it because I had some compatibility
problems with this and the original Catalyst Control Center.

Noise and temperature:
When I started my PC, I was amused about the fact that the card is actually
quite silent inside my PC! As you probably already figured out, my PC is
usually very silent because of the Noctua-fans. The 4850 is just a bit
noisy at boot-up, but I can't hear it so much under idle.

Under load, the card is more noisy off course, but what can you expect from
a card with such a small, hasty fan xD

At the moment, the HD 4850 is running 68 C under idle, and my old card was
running 46 C. Under load the temperature is almost at 80 C, my old 7600GT
was 58 C. To me, these temperatures seems like quite a lot, but I've heard
that it's a rather common temperature, so I shouldn't worry.

Even though the stock fan is quite the same noise as my old Zalman,
I will most likely upgrade the cooling to something more silent and cooler.
If/when I do, I will probably post in this thread

In-Game Performance:
I thought that including a small part where I evaluate the in-game
performance would be cool, so I booted up Need for Speed Most Wanted.
When I used my old VGA, this game ran at about 30-60 FPS with 800x600
and pretty low quality.
Here are a screenshot comparation from using (FYI: ATI 1280x1024 picture
is resized for better comparation):
XFX Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT @ 800x600, low/medium quality, 30-60 FPS
VS
VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4850 @ 1280x1024, highest quality, 40-60 FPS

I havn't got the time to try any other game yet, except Counter-Strike 1.6.
This is an old game with outdated graphic, but the only difference I found
here, except better antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, was the fact that
the ATI 4850 couldn't run 800x600 @ 144 Hertz on my Samsung SyncMaster
997MB old CRT monitor! ATI HD 4850 could just push it up to 119 Hertz,
not 144 like the old, Nvidia 7600 GT. :S

Anyway, I'm still very impressed by the power of the ATI 4850, I've always
been a Nvidia-boy, but I've used ATI before. ATI is definitely just as good as
Nvidia, and they offer very good cards for a handy price (eventhough I got
mine for free ).

Actually, I've never "liked" Nvidia, just their hardware.
This goes for Creative too, because they wouldn't release any Vista drivers
for their soundcards, and prohibited the users community to make,
and share their own, homemade drivers.

Nvidia really pissed me off when they forbid OmegaDrivers to stop making
excellent drivers which functioned much better than the normal WHQL
drivers. Luckily OmegaDrivers are allowed again, so that's a good thing.
(Sorry for the off-topic, I just got a little too much committed there ).

Final thoughts:
This card is a HUGE performance upgrade to my PC, and it was just in time
before I considered upgrading the graphic unit myself.

I did not have any major problems installing this beauty, and I would really
recommend taking a look at one of these cards when you are going to
upgrade your computer. I'm so excited to try it with Oblivion,
Unreal Tournament 2007 and Call of Duty 4!!!

Because I haven't tried the ATI Radeon 4850 for full yet,
I'm going to play some hardcore PC-games

Here is a final picture of my beautiful computer, which I'm so proud of

I would really like to thank DriverHeaven and AMD/ATI
for sending me this wonderful GPU-card, and I will assure you:
It's in good hands now

For future updates:

In the near future I will acquire a new cooler for this card (maybe the Thermalright HR-03 GT),
so I might include some pictures when I'm going to apply it.

nice followup and im glad to see you seemed excited when you got it.

Its a great card, I think ATI have got a great range out right now. I know after some handson today with my 4870X2's that even their high end is kicking some ass right now.

You took the perfect amount and with excellent narrative too!!

I can't believe it got to you so quickly. Enjoy your toy, feed the speed to need for speed and it should make call of duty become quite fruity.

Don't forget to post pics with new cooler when you get

Hehe, thank you for feedbacks!

It's good thing to hear that I chose the right amount of pictures and that
my English is okey. I thought of this as a small contribution to the site for
giving me such a magnificent card; and again, I really appreciate the gift! =)

When it comes to cooling, I will wait for the release of Thermalright T-Rad2
in August/September and then compare it's cooling capabilities with
the current Thermalright HR-03 GT.

In addition to a new cooler, I've ordered a Thermalright HR-11. Eventhough
that this cooler isn't a GREAT decrease in temperatures, I feel like building
my ATI 4850 to the full. Then I will manage to squeeze the most exclusive
juice out of it

If the T-Rad2 is good, I will probably wait for it to come to Norway (but I will
still update this thread as soon as I touch my card again). And yeah cozumel,
the card arrived extremely fast! I thought it would take many weeks, but
suddenly I got a nice surprise

Right now I'm going to install my newly bought OS, Windows Vista x64!
Eventhough I didn't know if I would like Vista, a friend of my convinced
me that I would enjoy it. So before I started installing it, I used vLite
to tweak this version of Vista so it suits me perfectly (now I can
play DX10 games with the new card!)

Btw eclipse, that 22" LCD is reeeeeaally calling my name quite loud now,
but my wallet is screaming "NO MORE TOYS (until next month )".
We'll see about that in the future.
