AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

Jay Leno on President Bush (Surprising)

Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....

"As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I
ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as
Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.

'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across
some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true
given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are
unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent
of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President.

In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a
change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking,
'What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a
day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in
the summer and heating in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a
job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any
time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the
last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from
the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to
present identification papers as we move through each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would
find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying
cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers
show up and provide services to help all and even send a
helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own
a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case
of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in
moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames,
thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen
TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a
gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your
family against attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or
militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where
90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and political
freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats
the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. ,
yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what
we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but
complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the
country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war
and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31
percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided
the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut
taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the
same guy who has been called every name in the book for
succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from
terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer
army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show?
Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you
couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good
things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the
President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it
because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry
ungrateful behind every day. Make no mistake about it.

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve,
and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is
currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They
are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general''
discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case
scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the
brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69
percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it
leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a
car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling
lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets
are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when
criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in
one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer
like OJ. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his
wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for
the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all
we have as country. There is exponentially more good than bad.
We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank
God several times a day, or at least be thankful and
appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control,
mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the
country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu
and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take
God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

Jay Leno

(btw) this letter has been ascribed to two other prominent television personalities.
It is a prime example of content created to provoke feelings either for or against
a political view or state a position. It is not known whether Jay Leno actually wrote this
or David Letterman, etc. http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/hitnail.asp

It certainly does, and frankly being an American overseas, it is embarrassing to see how many unelightened or biases political statements are made by prominent political, popular and media personalities and taken as the "gospel".
But I do believe that AMERICANS whine and complain too damn much.
Time to tighten up the belt, take care of the family and make some kind of contribution to their country, their lives or their families lives.

That letter is pure unadulterated bullshit; while it may seem "cute" it's actually insidious enough to make me taste vomit.

I find it funny that you would actually believe this letter represents every american, and it's that narrow way of thinking that just shows how unjustified that letter is. That letter quotes polls, yes because polls represent every america, riiiiiight. America has earned it's freedoms, and no matter what side of the fence you are on, america is a better country then most but it's freedoms allow for a double edged sword. I just find it funny that while we sit here being accused of heinous crimes, and insidious whining, and complaining about nothing, We have our European friends going crazier then us. (Austrian Father imrpsioning his daughter for incestous sex? wtf.)Simply because you live abroad doesn't make you a good american critic. Maybe your cynical view, and other tourists that act like idiots are what give Countries a sour taste of america.

I am veteran of both Afghan, and Iraq, I saw the joy in both eyes, and the seething hatred. Americans are more generous then most people, and have donated to just causes, but we're also a nation that doesn't take kindly to bullshit. Which is why many view us as complainers.

I agree with OmegaRed...I think this letter is a load of crap. The great thing about being an American is that we CAN complain...and that we can change the things that bother us! I also disagree with the statement that the world loves America but dislikes Americans...I think it's quite the opposite in my experience.
BTW, funster, your sig is hilarious! (random, I know)

no...
its adulterated.....
Its the same crap that is generated by anonymous writers allegedly on behalf all Americans by what appears to be the same person. But it is taken for the gospel. Words are dangerous and this is pretty benign, but there is a kernal of truth.
Americans bitch about the government almost as much as people in the UK, and are equally guilty of complaining about what is wrong but rarely about what is right about their country or their government.
You will find this kind of literary excrement written on behalf of Obama or McCain as well, and it makes the rounds through email inboxes and web sites.
Beware...
even more political rubbish to come just prior to the elections.
amazing what we accept as the gospel about politics and people.
I recall less than one hundred years ago, the media was used to elevate a man with absolutely no credentials to the highest position of power within his own government and his own country, and he drug his country and and his people into utter destruction within ten years of his ascension into power.

it doesn't take much.... as i've stated before...... history will likely repeat itself..... it's really unfortunate people live as blind as they do.

People think they know what they know, and they even may know what they know. What they really don't seem to know is what has happened before can easily happen again. Many know that previous civilizations fell for no apparent reasons, some know the reasons, some refuse to accept that possibility of those reasons being even remotely valid, alternative theories even. Yet the refuse to conceive the possibility of occuring in the present day.

I wonder what you Scots thought of our foreign policy when we were helping your continent and the rest of the world get rid of Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito??
And what problems do you have with a government that commits more financial aid to the world than your entire GDP?
And exactly what part of our foreign policy do you object to?
Is it the part that condones constitutional republics and societies that endorse freedom, or is it those policies that denounce tyranny, mass murder and oppression?
Or maybe it's the policies that help countries defend themselves from maniacs and terrorists? Or could it be the policies that pour countless billions of dollars into impoverished countries to help feed them and ward off warlords?

I'm so fargin' sick and tired of hearing the Europeans and the communist countries crying and moaning about Americas policies when they can't grow enough backbone to take a stand on issues around the world that would make a difference..................but they are quick to take our money while they are judging us.

The letter isnt BS, its the author, because someone put this together and didnt have the credibility in Hollywood to get it posted, it was actually acribed to several people, not just Jay Leno, but to put a fine point on it, work like this is considered very compelling and has merit simply because someone famous must have said it, not just the common man. etc.
There have been lots of letters circulating from the left to the right that were supposedly drawn from the brain trust of either McCain or Obama and the truth is they werent.
Words are very powerful and the media will spin every damn thing it can to the extend that it pushes the envelope of credibility just to make a few dollars.
This letter isnt without its merits or people that agree with its content, but to give it any credibility, it just had to be written by someone for Jay Leno, Letterman, etc.
If you want to say any bloody thing about anything important, you have to have the endorsement of someone famous otherwise your voice is drowned out.
When I first saw this letter my father sent it to me, with his own spin on it, and we saw it at work as well among the US airmen and women and they spent days debating its authenticity but not its message.
Americans have it pretty damn good, and we are becoming like poeples everywhere, blaming our governments for something that we ourselves should absorb some of the responsibility for, and that is our elected officials and the policies that we complain about the most.
We have to take responsibility for our country, our governments and the future of our children, and stop being so reliant on our governments for solutions to problems that we ourselves created.
One person or persons wrote a letter and got it kicked around, but their have been so many on both sides over the future of our country and our choices and people lap it up, not perhaps I hope because it was supposedly written by a celebrity but because of the salient points or grains of truth within the content of the message.

Re: AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

It matters because the letter is pure right wing drivel. Ascribing it to a left wing celebrity (or a moderate) is just a thinly veiled attempt at deceit. Anyway, I'm not re-reading that letter for a 3rd time as it makes me feel like puking each time I read it. Not only is the author so far removed from reality but even now any Republican worth his weight would laugh at how high esteemed Bush is held up by the writer (and lol at the Bush preventing a recession ).

Anyway, the letter isn't about taking responsibility for the country if I was to sum it all up the message is: "Don't like America? Shut up and be happy for what you've got! May God Bless America!"

Re: AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

It's not a matter of being "unhappy" at all.
Most Americans I know love this country and feel truly blessed to live in the land of plenty.
But that, in no way, should inhibit us from holding leaders and agencies accountable for their actions just as we are held responsible for ours.
And if that means complaining about things that we don't like, what's wrong with that?
I see the letter as a way of trying to manipulate people into shutting up about things they don't like because there are "so many things" to like.
That's not the American way.
We have a voice, regardless if the substance of our complaints pisses people off or not.

And if that means complaining about things that we don't like, what's wrong with that?
I see the letter as a way of trying to manipulate people into shutting up about things they don't like because there are "so many things" to like.
That's not the American way.
We have a voice, regardless if the substance of our complaints pisses people off or not.
absolutely..
why should an anonymous letter suffice for the voice of the American people.
why should people rely on as words to sum up their feelings. people find something clever in a newspaper or their inbox and whether its left wing or right wing rubbish, somehow defines their position or describes their feelings.
People are looking for a message, looking for direction because of all the hype out there about politics, etc.
But no Omega, it isnt right wing drivel, its just a hacks opinion, and you can find them in abundance everwhere, like assholes no matter where you look.
But then everyone is entitled to an opinion, like a rectum, unique and peculiar to the individual who owns it.

I have a feeling Mr. Falstaff you've been outside the states either to long, or never really lived in a truly impoverished way. Forgive my assumptions, but I think everyone forgets about difficulties when they have such a bright future.

so much for assumptions, but I pulled my self up by my bootstraps long ago and I have a keen insight into "getting off ones ass" and making my own future.

I come from a bucolic background and not so many generations removed from immigrants that came to America seeking a future that they had to make for themselves and their children, neither relying to much on government, nor trusting it as well.

being a "have" or a "have not" is irrelavent now, since I am working toward the future of my children and intolerant of those that sit on their spotty behinds and expect others to do the work for them. That is another unfortunate legacy of our country and we may slide the slippery slope of socialism.

no one gave me forty acres and a mule and promised me a chicken in my pot nor do I expect one. I prefer to see what I can do within my own means. As much as I really disliked John F. Kennedy, he did use a rather clever phrase from one of his staff speech writers that still endures to this day.

"In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

Now the trumpet summons us again - not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are - but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation" - a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.

Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shank from this responsibility - I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavour will light our country and all who serve it -- and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

Now, someone wrote that for President Kennedy, and perhaps that speech writer's name will lost to history and fade into obscurity, but the message is true, at the very least, the intent is clear, like the letter attributed to Jay Leno for instance, but it polarized the community of those that heard it or read it somewhere, either for or against President Kennedy, but it did have an effect.

President Kennedy, grandson of a prominent whiskey smuggler and politician from America's colorful past, but his heart was in the right place, and so too I hope is the voice of lots of people all over the world. It isnt IMO who said it, but if the cotent of the message isnt lost, and it electrifies and restores life to hope or purpose in the future or the future of our children or better yet our nation or even the world, then the purpose of that message is not lost, as surely as something carved into stone that has survived the the test of time, and passed on to each generation as a truth, or a blessing or a goal worth achieving in spite of nations that rise or fall.

If you understand social contracts, it isnt about what you legally are entitled to or what your legal rights are, but more about enalienable rights. The pursuit of happiness, as one famous American mentioned is more to do with what responsibility man will assume to ensure that no government is allowed by whatever means, to take your liberty away from you.

DONT LET GOVERNMENT TAKE YOUR LIBERTY AWAY FROM YOU!!!

"trust too much in government, and suckling at the great teet of the whore of government will only bring you ruin, because when you are finally content and your belly is full, you will be rejected". - Jeff Fallang

Very nice Falstaff.
I like your style and your way of thinking.

For anyone to suggest that you are out of touch because you understand the value and importance of individualism shows a large degree of immaturity and naivete on their part.

Re: AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

All it takes is the blink of a eye, or idlness in the face of change.
I dont believe poeple realize that if they do nothing, for fear of making a choice that may change their immediate future
they have still made a choice.
Life is about choices
and we all should own more of them
but better yet
accept responsibility for them, good or bad
electing someone to a political office by placing them on a pedestal and spinning them round and round till they are drunk with the momentum of their position or place or power will only lead to possible disaster.
I wish great men and women of the world were known not for what they promised, but what they achieved
not by lies, deciet or trickery
but by offering them a choice, to accept the challenge of building a future for our children.
or stepping aside and allowing those that can, and will accomplish this task and learning lessons from the past.
But I fear like Rome, the community of man, this great engine we call earth is ruled by a mob.
Somewhere, within every single person exists a culture of one.
And within that culture there must be hope and faith that the adventure of challenging the past to build on the future not just for them, but for their children is the most selfless and noble thing that can be done.
Sacrifice, service and sincere devotion to the idea that man can rise above destruction and faliures of the past is one of the fundamental elements of my own philosphy and I wish I could say I always felt that way.
But I dont believe for one minute that Obama, McCain, Bush or Clinton, Reagan or Kennedy are or were perfect. As men, each one of us must challenge ourselves and so something for the children that will inherit the terribly mess we have all created.
By action, word, thought and deed we are defined.
let us be known for what we gave to the future
not for what we took from it.

I agree with some of what you say, however when you come across as a cynic, or are cynical of everything political, you then fail the very system you are advocating, the system and fundamentals of liberty are such that as Americans it is our civic duty to weed down corruption, In fact the Bill of Rights was advocated in such a way that the entire reason we have the 2nd amendment, Is to overthrow the "people's army" Basically revolt. Which is ironic because it's labeled as treason.

The Problem I have with your way of thinking is that, you think everyone is given the same, EQUAL opportunity, and that by merely working towards a end goal of success, it will be reached. It doesn't work that way, It never has. America is a fractured nation. Native americans Suffered the worst of it, and we are all but eliminated or our blood is mixed with "White man" Basically There are very few true 100% Natives. Blacks Are fractured because they do not have the wealth of the white man, and the same oppurtunity that gives them freedom, also hinders their society as a whole. Which is funny because it should be American society, However it's divided into subsections, I don't know what you have seen, and will not presume what you have seen, but from your postings, you bitch about politics, are decidely cynical. The Process itself only works if people actually vote for their interest, which is where I do agree with you America, Has become complacent, lazy, and no longer has voted its interest, instead becoming more worried about self interest, which for a time was the only important self interest. That's where we lost our liberty, That's where we lost most of our freedom. However my argument within this wall of text to you sir, is, Don't Simply look at the system, as an outsider, you must also walk the walk of life from the inside as well. IT's easy if you've been abroad for years to become complacent about the real issues somewhere else as well. I know I was in Afghan and Iraq, and those consumed me for a time. However Your life experience should allow you to view the world, The USA as a whole, and look beyond the simply petty political landscape, and view what actually effects us stateside. Age does not simply by itself bestow experience, nor does Wisdom necessarily only come with age. But I digress, this argument isn't all it should have been but It would have been a novel, if I had. I respect your opinion, but I my point in my observation was that You sound like someone who's not had very much hardship, as others I have seen. Therefore it's hard to actually see the impact of things, when you don't have an absolute perspective.

Re: AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

I believe, without putting a pesonal spin on your remarks is that you disagree with me.
thats fine, I can live with that.
But I am sorry that most of what I was trying to say may have been misunderstood or understated.
I am pretty damn smart, and I do have a unique perspective based on my experience, and I am cynical about politics after 30 years of service to my government, I watch the same thing happen every four years.
I am not complacent - I honestly dont know how you drew that conclusion but to each his own.
Americans have to take responsibility for the choices they make and hope for the future in spite of the politics and the media spin, and make informed choices, thats all.
The America that I was born into and the America I see today has changed in many ways.
I see America becoming more socialized and that bothers me a great deal.
What price is America willing to pay to put that chicken in every pot, a strong military and politicians that are accountable to their constiuents and the American people.
Are Americans willing to pay for that?
I do agree with the remak that Americans are losing their liberty, but they are giving that away.
Its so easy to hand personal information, money, and freedom to the government just to have that chicken in the pot at night.
The people that impress me are those that start their own businesses, invest and save for their children or families, build on the successes and the failures of the past and step out of the box and strive to better themselves to make a difference for the future.
As far as hardship...I understand you cannot accurately draw any conclusions about that subject because I dont talk about it anymore. But it isnt about me, its about the America and the world I live in.
I wish Americans could go to the countries they see on television where people have no water, medical care or hope and really experience it. That the crimes against children, against women and against families that they watch television are happpening in America as well.
Americans need to turn the microscope away from their leaders and back on themselves occasionally and do some personal inventory, thats my opinion.

Re: AMERICANS ARE WHINERS!!! (letter from Jay Leno)

You must also remember however, that communism, and socialism are not inherently evil, it is the will of men that make them so, Any Government must always be throughly cleansed of the tyrants and whatnot to ensure it is not corrupt, The problem in America is no one is ready or willing, nor able to exercise any form of civil revolt.

As for my complacent comments, I don't know how long you've been stationed outside the US, but Social Services are needed, There are people that do work hard, but never obtain a chance at the american dream, and then there are those that live the american dream by fucking over americans as a whole (Thank you Financial crisis) the Pendulum swings both ways.

I find it ironic that shortly after this letter is posted you receive comments or whining and complaining about it. To all you whiners and complainers thanks for verifying the letter is correct!
