Its kinda strange

I have a dynamic IP address but since I made a NAT/File Server/Firewall and haven't had to restart or shut it down in 2-3 weeks My IP hasn't changed and its just kind of unerving from when I was disconnected all the time with my USB DSL modem, Since replaced by Cable. It takes away that safe feeling I had with a dynamic IP that even if someone broke in they wouldn't know what my IP was day to day

Just wondering what other people have set up for there networks/Internet access

Network with Broadband - I dislike having the same IP over and over, but I've never really had a security concern with my current network setup (firewalls galore, and apples on all the connections but for my comp, to boot), and I've never had a need to get rid of my current IP

Yeah, actually I was thinking of leasing an IP from my ISP so I could have a static one for differnet projects, VPN and maybe a website or FTP server for when I am out and about and need to get something, but then security is a concern again, really still new to making sure everything is locked down so no one can take advantage of me and my server, and Until I get a DVD-Burner I can't backup all my stuff on it

I am at the mercy of my address

I live in the center of an area that was sidestepped by technology, very retro sixties apartment living, hell I don't even have cable and the trains rumble by every morning shaking my current phone connections even with the signal amplifiers. I am lucky if can stay online for more than a few hours, For those of you with DSL and Cable ready addresses you are on a different planet than I am.....sniff...

I feel for you FJ........I live out in the middle of "bum-phuckt-egypt" as well.......no cable and no DSL.....56k would kick me off all the time........I finally had to force myself into the 21st century.......I have Sat TV and 2-way Sat broadband. I can't play Quake III online, but C&C General's I have no problem with at all, and the download rate is faster than any of the people I know that have Cable and DSL up here in the Great White North. Security isn't really an issue, I use firewall's and the connection is also protected at the Sat level. A few times a month someone is able to make it past the Sat protection, but my firewall stops them cold. I monitor the connection traffic carefully, just in case.

Cheers!!

Thats a bloody good idea..

WiFi hasn't caught on here yet, but we have Cheyenne mountian, Peterson AFB, The Air Force Academy, Fort Carson and Falcon Air Station, you'd think that we would have the resources to make something happen here, but I am in techno hell. so many companies competeing for business you'd think it would be better, I have to use the broadband in my clinic's basement where I make orthotics to get around at a faster speed, I wonder how many other people use their interenet at work....at least it is firewalled

Right now I have a static IP on a 1MB/128KB cable connection... Modem -> LINUX box -> firewall/router -> 2 current systems. Pretty safe, and secure ... I am looking forward to the new DSL service provider that will be coming in soon ... 6Mb/1Mb connections will be available in my area soon... Just have to make it fit into the budget some how

Wyre.........I know what you mean about the "budget" part. I can upgrade my DirecWay 2-way service to as many down streams as I like from the Satellite, but it isn't cheap. To double my bandwidth right now and get the static IP, it would cost about $100 a month, but it is hard to justify the cost when I don't do MAJOR downloading that often, and I am usually limited by who it is I am connecting to as it is now. Wish they would string the Fiber Optics over this way, the main line is about 1/4 mile away, but they aren't planning on splitting it until close to 2005.

Shi*t I voted for the wrong one. I voted Broadband standalone but I have a Broadband with network. Well now you know.

I'm one. I could get 56k @home, but besides poor quality service, the phone bills would kill me (actually my girlfriend would kill me when she'd see the phone bills). There are many "cable" companies... all bad and extremely expensive. So...
