Christmas present for myself: Macbook Air

As I hinted a couple of times around the forums earlier, I've given myself a brand new Macbook Air for Christmas.

It's not one of the new nVidia based models, it's in fact the same model Zardon reviewed here. Sort of an impulse buy, but when I saw them going for abit over AU$500 off their original retail price, I couldn't help myself, as I've wanted one for quite a while, but can't really fork out close to AU$3000 for the newest models

1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb Ram, 80Gb Hdd

The thing is incredibly light, and although the specs don't compare to my desktop mac pro, it doesn't feel underpowered or slow, though I've yet to test it for anything more than web/email/msn.

The multi-touch trackpad is great, navigating through finder/safari is a breeze, I only wish Opera would work with these gestures.

The one down-side is that it can get quite hot at times, which I need to be careful of, especially now in the middle of summer.

I've managed to install Office '08, Logic Pro and a few utilities, while still having about half of the hard-disk space free - a little app called XSlimmer really helped me here, stripped out all the non-essential components of my Universal Binary applications like PowerPC support and other languages - on average reduces the filesize of an application by about half, or in the case of safari, drops the file size from 33mb to just over 8mb.

More thoughts and pics to come as I continue to play with my newest toy.

Have you used Office '08 before? I find it absolutely horribly slow and so does everyone I know. I still use it but I really should look in to going back to Open Office.

off topic: just out of quriosity, what kind of DJ CD players do you have?

i have the Pioneer CDJ-100S... they have served me for about 5 years now... still read CDs as the day i bought them ... but one of them has a jog weel problem, the jog weel is kinda skipping when you turn it, you have to turn it and turn it to get to the correct timing on the timer, whereas the other one just needs a few degrees to the left or to the right to get the timer just right :-S.

back on topic: you could buy the Final Scratch kit... a friend of mine has it ... i gotta admit, it's awesome ... used it a couple of times in combination with Technics MKII... it sounds really great, and the scratch effects are pretty genuine (close to an original analogue vinyl scratch).

i've got two Tascam CD-DJ1s and TT-M1 adaptors (little wheels that sit on my vinyl turntables to control the cd players) - theyre a little unreliable about reading cds at times though, might just need a good clean, but I want the serato system

I'm looking at the serato system over final scratch, simply because I think Serato have better time & pitch algorithms, their "Pitch 'n' Time Pro" came out as one of the best time-stretching plugins for logic/pro tools, so I'm assuming this level of quality filters down to scratch live.

Well worth it. front row is great.

use the mini DVI out to a big HD and its a formidable little media center too (if you have a decent sized external HDD). handles HD content great and the quality of the digital output is very impressive.

going to be testing that function out NYE at my gf's, we're just having a quiet one as we're both working the next day, but I'm loading a few DVDs (don't have any HD media/content) onto it and will be playing it through a stadnard definition 32" plasma display
