Re: Dads old Dell
Thanks, Mac
I did have my Celeron 2.4 in there on an AsRock micro-atx but memory was limited to DDR 333. This runs 400, better CPU, and I can clock this board somewhat so it's a major upgrade. (for me anyways) Sempron runs nice...... Dad's old Dell was a Dimension 4100 with a PIII 833mhz. So it's quite the Hot Rod now.

Re: Dads old Dell
Those systems aren't all that old really... it's great that you can pick up good parts from just a few years ago for next to nothing.
I have a mate who was using a Sempron 3100 in his main gaming rig until recentley, and it managed everything he played fine (no, he did not play Crysis), albeit on lowered details. I still have a Northwood Dell that I use for Linux and general fooling around, and a K6 that I until recentley (work being done on the house) worked as a NAS box.

Re: Dads old Dell
Yeah, It's not that old..... except for the Dell case that is. I wouldn't have gotten it so cheap if I didn't know how to solder though....... one cap was majorly bulged and part of the previous owners problems, so it would have been flakey without the change. Seems solid now though......
Once I get OS figured out and the SATA drive in place I'll see what it's got.

I must warn you to not get your overclocking hopes up since you've got the K8T800 chipset. The problem with it is that it has no AGP or any other frequency lock, so when you raise FSB to OC the CPU, AGP frequency, ATA frequency and all other frequencies will increase and some component will become unstable pretty soon. Often, only about a 10% increase is possible before graphics card can no longer work stably.

Re: Dads old Dell
Thanks IvanV, I sort of saw that coming because it's not an Nforce3 chipset. But some of the K8T800 PRO boards did have AGP/PCI lock and this one may actually have it, it is the "pro" chipset. I know ASUS did on their K8T800 Pro, (from what I've read, not from experience) Seems the "pro" chipset can do it, it's up to the bios if it's implemented or not. I haven't found much info yet on this particular board.
I'm not a big overclocking type of guy, if I wanted to burn stuff up I'd use a match, but a little "dyno tuning" can always be fun..... I bumped the FSB up to 210 last night and no other changes, with no issues, it felt snappier at that speed. So, I'll be satisfied with whatever it can do.

Re: Dads old Dell
Oh, that's great, I assumed from the motherboard name that it was the "regular" K8T800, like what I've got I've got in my PC, and thought I'd give you a heads up about that issue, but you had it covered. Have fun!

Re: Dads old Dell
Try harder! We want smoke!
I managed a stable 3.8GHZ on my Cedar Mill Celeron, but I think it lunched the VIA mobo over time :P

Re: Dads old Dell
Maxtor SATA got here today (complete with the other guys data and software..... sheesh, how can people be so stupid)
At least I'm not a crook so the guy is safe........ I mean it could have been anybody that bought that drive...... ![]() Also got the Audigy1 drive today to hook up to the SB Live! 5.1 (both AUD_EXT) so just about everything is in house to finalize this hot rodded Dell......... This case is going to limit overclocking some because of limited airflow, it's not bad, but it's a small chassis. I added the front fan, put a better rear fan and the Antec PSU adds some airflow too, but it's not an overclocking case if you know what I mean. Clocking isn't my main reason for doing this anyways so it's not a big issue. It has been running fine these last few days at 210mhz FSB tho' with no issues...... If this board locks PCI/AGP and I can get close to 2ghz I'll be happy.

Re: Dads old Dell
It's bad well that sucks
![]() Are you running XP or Vista? I had some strange things happening on XP with a SATA HD and an IDE DVD drive. Under SATA setup selecting AHPI instead of IDE would knock the DVD drive out of the system ... under Vista it didn't.

Re: Dads old Dell
I'm running XP and both sata and ide.... but this is a hardware deal..... this drive won't work in my P4 either, which also has a sata/ide mix which works fine. P4 even has a maxtor like this bad one......
Live and learn............... tired of it tho'

Re: Dads old Dell
I was there end of last year.... had power issues with my house.... took out a lot of stuff, not just computers either. That's why all the rebuilding here recently even though I can't afford it.......
I'm going to see if "powermax" can do anything with it.... it's in "semi functional" mode but I don't have much hope for it. Certainly wouldn't rely on it for music recording..... those licks can't be replaced, you know? I don't want to use the IDE one from the Cele because that board still runs and the drive is loaded with stuff from that system. No matter how I swap stuff around here I'm short one drive (or two if I want to go RAID)

![]() Came close on the final but never quite got the "room" feel I did in that one again.

So, the Maxtor SATA was dead and I was running these in a RAID down in the basement AMD 2800+ Barton/Soltek system. I had these Hitachi SATA II on a promise add in controller and was never overly impressed with the speed. So I added them to "Dad's old Dell" in RAID 0 off the mobo.... (mobo runs at sata I 150)
That's much better ![]() But it does leave an empty spot in the Barton ... ![]() Audigy drive is in, hooked to a Live! 5.1. I'll be adding an Audigy4 value with added SPDIF IN and OUT from some ideas TravelRec came up with.... http://www.hardwareheaven.com/general-...uncovered.html gotta warm up the Ungar... ![]() So this "Dell" is now AMD Sempron 3100+ (Stock cooler) Biostar K8K800-A7A (pro) 1Gig PC3200 DDR eVGA GeForce FX 5600 Antec True430 Maxtor 80Gig IDE boot drive 2X Hitachi 160Gig SATA RAID Dual Sound Blasters with the Audigy drive Added fans and case mods, etc. I've got about $100 in it total. Don't think Dad would recognize it
