Defiance - the movie
Saw it last night on bluray and was pleasantly surprised. First time I have found Daniel Craig to be watchable. great sets and cinematography too.
On another note I watched "The Broken" this week as well and it is just the most predictable nonsense I have seen. I had the ending by about 30 minutes in and was stunned to find out about an hour later I was right. |

Re: Defiance - the movie
cool, got Defiance the other day but haven't gotten around to it yet.
good to know its worth a look, might watch it later on tonight ![]() and I'm with you re Craig, the only thing I've ever liked him in was Moll Flanders (and nekked Alex Kingston had nothing to do with that. probably.) |

Re: Defiance - the movie
Although they say Defiance is based on an actual event, it isn't entirely true.. they let them look like 'heroes', but those men were scavenging villages, raping women etc.. But they don't show or tell you that. T'was a bunch of thieves and scum it was..
but it's a pretty good film otherwise..

Re: Defiance - the movie
I bought it a week ago and watched it several times. It is one of the best roles I have seen for Daniel Craig. I was moved by the story, the performance and the production. A cast of really strong actors and actresses that delivered a rewarding experience.
Havent seen the Broken. Kept busy with Miyazaki movies this week too....never get enough.

Re: Defiance - the movie
If you can get past the premise for the movie, it is as someone already mentioned, about survival in Belarussia during the Nazi occupation, for a band of Jews and sympathisers fleeing tyranny and oppresion, fighting and dying in the forests of Poland. I was pleasantly pleased to see Alexa Davalos as well, as she added so much to some of the Chronicles of Riddick. She really draws you in. I think the casting was brilliant, but I am sure there is some dissention. If you remember Jamie Bell from his other movies his character will wont surprise you, Liev Schrieber adds his own flavor to the development of the story and I believe his performance is the matrix upon which all the characters interwoven within the story.
But then... I am biased.

Re: Defiance - the movie
I had been saving it since I was somewhat sceptical of the story, but it was definitely enjoyable and could well have been a full three hours long without going stale. The brother relationship between Schriever and Craig worked very well and could have been played out even more. I also prefer it like this when a movie has many not so well known actors that do their parts just fine. They could have added someone like Ben Kingsley in the later part just for recognition, but they didn't and that was certainly for the better.

Re: Defiance - the movie
did you manage to catch it in the movies or on bluray? I have to say some of the scenery and camera work was spectacular. really a great disc conversion too, ideal for showing off a high def tv.

Re: Defiance - the movie
In a small theater, seems it got late to Sweden without not much advertising. But yeah I remember now that I recurringly found myself thinking that the forest footage felt very lifelike and the camerawork fluid with some almost constant motion without getting shaky.
Also the often used intermixing of russian/polish language added to the atmosphere, but also had me fooled once or twice since in the theatre here it's all texted wether english or other. I try not to look at the text line whenever english is spoken since it detracts from the experience, so once or twice I missed a few words before I looked down on the text that I really needed to read. The actors use of accents on the english made me slow to react.

Re: Defiance - the movie
I saw it in the cinema - great movie loved the transition from black and white original footage to the beginning of the film.
