International transport of computer?
I am wondering.. at the end of this of this year I am moving to New Zealand to start my study of architecture in February. Would it be worthwhile to get my stuff (especially my computer stuff: case, speakers, monitor) shipped over? Like with container transport with ship. I reckon that's the cheapest way to do it..
Is it worthwhile, or can I better sell it here (holland) and buy a new one when I'm settled there. Probably need a laptop for student work anyway.. I just want a desktop as well and I'm kinda attached to my machine.. What do you reckon? take it with me or sell it and buy a brand new thing... (dunno if NZ is relatively cheap on computer hardware) I just can't find anything about shipping rates

Re: International transport of computer?
I don't recomend you to ship it over the sea. The journey might damage the PC. The ship travels in area with high humidity and the container will be heated up so when you get the PC it might not work at all. And it's not cheap... Best deal would be that you would sell it in NL and then get a laptop. Since the new laptop would cost less than transporting the PC over seas to NZ...

Re: International transport of computer?
hmm, yea. Kinda figured that already.
I found the UPS and tried the online calculator thingy.. Would cost me 950 euro's.. Ah well.. I'll just buy a good laptop then, like you said.

Re: International transport of computer?
Eh, you can always ship it with the cheapest UPS option, make sure you have the measurements right, and insure it for a few thousand.
How long are you planning on staying in New Zealand? From what I know NZ is not that cheap...

Re: International transport of computer?
First 5 years of study, after that I hope I can get a permanent visa.
I think NZ is about the same as Holland in hardware prices..

Re: International transport of computer?
I'm no expert when it comes to new zealand but my experience with going to new places is: its less of a hassle to move with less stuff. Better to save ur harddrive if you have important stuff on it. Unless you have a killer once in a lifetime collectors rig which might be worth the move. Otherwise i'd let it stay.

Re: International transport of computer?
The two things that would concern me have already been mentioned shipping cost and prices of replacement hardware in NZ.

Re: International transport of computer?
I sold my system when I moved to NZ from the UK. My uncle got me a good deal on the exporting of my stuff, but he said the PC would probably not fare well on the ship. There's a risk of extreme temperature changes plus moisture so unless you pack it in a well padded and insulated box or air mail it, I'd say not to bother.
For an idea of hardware costs over here try Playtech. This are where I generally shop. We don't have as much choice as the UK/US but the prices aren't too bad. Exchange rate at the mo is around 1 USD = 1.58864 NZD for the Greenback 1 GBP = 2.58760 NZD for the Pound 1 EUR = 2.18983 NZD for the Euro As an example - An Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 is NZ$336.38 (thats US$212.00 or GBP130.00 or EUR154.00). Hope this helps.
