Facebook 'sparked white flight from MySpace'

A "WHITE flight" to Facebook has turned MySpace into a black ghetto, according to a social analyst in the US.

Danah Boyd said Facebook's arrival sparked a migration from MySpace of white users, the educated and the wealthy, while non-whites had stuck together on MySpace.

MySpace is owned by News Corp, the parent company of the publisher of NEWS.com.au.

"It wasn't just anyone who left MySpace to go to Facebook," Ms Boyd, who works with Microsoft Research New England, told a crowd at New York's Democracy Forum.

anyone over in the US have any insight to this?

Here in Melbourne, I've noticed a trend away from Myspace towards Facebook, across the spectrum (no matter what ethnic background) so this article came as a bit of a surprise to me

Myspace is really all about the music. Perhaps myspace then appeals more to cultures or cliques that idolize musicians.

edit: my buddy just made a good point. Facebook was originally only open to college students, so the seeds of the site were already middle class and higher.

All I know about myspace is that whenever I visited a page there it was the laggiest heaviest pos I encountered on the interwebs.
As for the colours of people leaving or staying it, I have to say, I couldn't care less.

Each one targets their own demographic/audience. Facebook is "cleaner" than MySpace, but thats not due to the userbase, its more to the fact Facebook is newer, and is less "cluttered" with garbage.

Myspace is basically like poster/add board. Facebook is just an unorganized mess. Both site's really need to goto the school of common sense. They need to learn flow design. Both sites do not flow, I can't stand using either of them and closed both accounts. It's a fad and kinda useless IMO(opinion) much like Twitter.

Myspace seems to be about music/rap wannabees showcasing their (lack of) talent, or faffing around with layouts.

Facebook seems to be more connection orientated, though the number of possible apps is already resulting in fragmentation among similar apps, with a seemingly infinite number of friend/picture share apps, some looking like absolute clones of each other.

Myspace is ghetto enough as it is, the layouts of peoples pages are incomprehensible and there's usually some crappy song playing on just about any page therefore this news doesn't shock me. Facebook is a functional tool used to get in touch with old friends, plan events and make new friends; Myspace is little more than bling; it's a place to post pics of your shiny new rims and add pornstars/models to your friends list to make you seem like a pimp. Your Facebook profile tells people about yourself. A Myspace profile is something you gawk at, like a lost page on the internet from 1996 designed with Netscape in mind. Myspace is the internet equivalent of scratching "I WUZ HERE!" onto the wall of a bathroom stall.
