musical moments of glory
Weird thread title for sure, but I wanted to get your attention.
What songs come to mind when you think of a stunning performance? I don't necessarily mean a vocal, but maybe a guitar riff or solo. but something stunningly beyond reproach. I have quite a few in mind but the first one that always comes to mind is Steve Perry's vocal in Journey's Faithfully. Still blows my mind every time I hear it, what a voice that guy had in his prime. I guess im showing my age a little but if you are in any shape or form a fan of vocals this has to be one of the greatest pop ballads of all time. Right from the heart, you can feel it. typical crap youtube sound quality and corny 80's rock ballad video with a rather weird moustache but hey ... (followed up by a version with the new journey vocalist) |

Re: musical moments of glory
Great topic Zardon.
Journey=good music. Though, not my favourite. I will add to this thread with a musical moment, song, that influenced me a lot and took me years till I find the title of the song and artist and a copy of the CD. I first saw the following music video in a local TV station in the early 90s, but no idea who it was. The youtube quality is horrible, but I strongly suggest for anyone to buy his CD. It's just great music and like 1000000 times better than what it sounds like here. his voice and the music are just stunning. I don't know how to make it appear in this page, but here is the link. (FIXED by ZARDON- hope that helps) and something more modern of his just for a tease

I have tons and tons, but I won't post them all at once (I've already posted a bunch in the "What are you listening to RIGHT NOW" thread).
Starting with: Also... late addition:

okay, I am so EMO, but I am back on the meds with my leg in a bloody splint again so I figure, what the hell. Maybe some of you will remember this music from a bygone age, women, whiskey, warm summers and magic.

damn, not available in the UK due to Copyright rubbish.
I edited your quote so I could see the vid, but I was going to post Jungle Land originally because the Boss has so many good songs. But I love this song so much and reminds me of my Brother in Afghanistan right now.

Embedding is disabled on the vid anyway
![]() There's just so much energy and machismo (if that's the word I'm searching for) in the song...it's a man's man song. The video itself is incredibly corny.

Re: musical moments of glory
Yeah, some good tracks but are they all absolute masterpieces? I wasn't really trying to start a thread with 'great songs' like the other one we already have, but I mean like the songs in your life that have really moved you in some way.
I guess on reflection me posting journey "faithfully" looks a bit gay but I do remember dating the most wonderful woman at the time and we were apart for a few months and the song brought on new meaning. Not sure why, but Journey always reminds me of America, much in the same way Boston do. Something about that AOR sound that just has America written all over it. Its a bit like the way Rammstein remind me of Germany (not in a good way mind you). |

Re: musical moments of glory
Probably the most under rated musician in recent memory. He played more than just guitar, and was good with all of the instruments that he played.

Journey doesnt sound gay man, its still played quite a bit and covered quite well by wedding singers and poeple my age. ![]() But songs remind us more than justs sentinel events in our lives. I understand the sentiment behind the choices I made, when I lost everything I still the music or new someone who could play it. I can think of two songs that just ring like a bell when I think of my first ex or second or third, etc. But I recall the very day I joined the Navy in 1977, People were listening to Journey in San Diego, and I bought infinity and Evolution just because people would always listen to Daydream or Lights over and over and learn to sing it with a near perfect falsetto. Girls loved Journey and if you could thrash it out on a guitar it was even better. I dont know, but Bad Company had some really good songs that remind me of getting aquainted with mortality and lost loves too man. I appreciate you sharing your choice, for a guy like me, well there so many

Re: musical moments of glory
Along the lines of what Falstaff said. I thought this thread would be perfect for songs that "meant" something to ourselves. All the songs I post in here will be ones that have moved me

Re: musical moments of glory
For me, it's not the music but the spirit of it that I've allowed to form me over the years - and the fact that you get to see a bit of the soul of the performer or writer and can identify with them - they feel, or have felt, as I do.
Songs like: One Horse Town by Elton John - and that is a tour de force piece of music - Lord, get me out of Alabama! Secret of Life by James Taylor - even Einstein can't understand it all - so true... and just found this on YouTube - check it out. There's something special about masters getting together, egos aside, for the joy of performing - and performing together. Puts a real smile on my face - and I can take that into the world with me, for others, for awhile... Steve Martin and others playing with banjo Maestro Bela Fleck! YouTube - Steve Martin, Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka Banjo HDTV The Crow Holy schmoly cow! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icMTV...eature=related

Re: musical moments of glory
Oh my God, thats so much like the BAUHAUS I used to listen to, really takes me back to a different time and place, LOL.
Okay okay, check this out, I recall my first break up with a girl in High School and my friend Barry Katzinzakis had Led Zeppelin cranked up. This was so awesome cranked up in his garage, it even made the glasses rattle in the cupboard. I found this on Youtube and its just raw enough to capture the Angst of my youth at that point. or the Yardbirds version (my favorite)

Re: musical moments of glory
I can actually recall when we wound hang out at my friends house Ramstein and listen to the Yardbirds, and he gave me a gloosy photo book with the entire first New Yardbirds concert in Holland I think. Well shit, I couldnt believe it, I thought Plant looked like a fool, but I always liked Page, Beck or Clapton or John Mayall, and of course Paul Kosoff and Rory Gallagher. I had the first three Zeppelin albums and we played them till the groove wore out. Girls would sneak cigarettes and booze from their parents and we would go to the old garage in the woods to listen to the music and get wasted. Funny though, we didnt give a damn about the Who, rather we would listen to Cream, etc.
I still recall Dereks Dominos and Traffic as being my all time favorite, not Led Zeppelin, etc. I remember watching my best friends mom dancing to this butt naked (and drunk) and watch her cry and then fall asleep in the living room to this song. The original is better but I chose the Claptonized version.

Re: musical moments of glory
No shit, I can recall with great accuracy every tattoo on Barry's mothers body, and when I hear Blind Faith or even Free, I can still her dancing man. She was f**king hot, and at my age, the next step to overcoming the painful months of puberty.
When I see a stripper dance to Blind Faith or Free, it still warms my heart. you have never seen pole dancing till you saw it at the Orange Street Station in Vancouver BC. GOD BLESS ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Re: musical moments of glory
Probably the most underrated musician of all time - FRANK ZAPPA doing "City of Tiny Lights"

Re: musical moments of glory
I dont know if Broken Hearts are for Assholes is a musical masterpiece, I like the guitar solos from Joes Garage, but its worth a spin on Youtube and not a post here I suppose. I dont think Frank Zappa did anything that warrants a plug here, but Sheik yer booty and Joes Garage are damn good. When my friends used to get stoned and wanted a laugh, the would play Apostrophe quite a bit. I dont think is underrated, a guitar player turned me on to it a long time, but I dont know even with the way his music resonates even now that he would draw huge crowds in Berkley (if he was still alive), but you never know, California is wierd.
