Archos or PSP ?

this month coming I'm looking at treating myself cos I'll have a small amount of spare cash.

so, fairly simple question.
do I get an older Archos (looking at something like the 604wifi maybe), or a slim PSP with a big memory card?

I've never had the pleasure of playing with either for any amount of time, so only really know what I've read online.
How big a pain is it to 'mess' around with the Archos? I know about the plugin carp and all, but they can be played with, right??

and the PSP, about all I know is that some firmware is easier to mess with than others. (been looking at 'like new' one's with custom firmware at some places)
how easy is it to watch tv shows, browse the web etc on ??
what about playing games from the mem stick?? is it as easy to do as with my DS??
how do movies / shows look on the psp screen versus an archos screen?

and how do battery lives compare??
could I watch, for example, 3 or 4 episodes of The Closer on 1 charge easily enough?
what's the sound quality like on the psp? even vaguely close to an archos?

any / all advice warmly recieved

When the battery is new on the PSP it will keep playing videos for a couple of hours at least. Perhaps more, been a while

The sound quality of movies is fine as long as you use headphones.
I had a PSP till last month when I sold it to a cousin. Rarely used it.
Why do you want a PSP or an Archos? Just for the video capability?
There are other players now days that play video files...

largely for watching vids, web browsing (can piggyback wifi signals through most of my village

), and I suppose I'd play the odd game if I had a psp too

also just cos of how cheaply you can pick em up for now, and I have always sorta had an urge to buy a psp, but couldn't really justify the cost of it before.
but on the otehr hand, I probably wouldn't play that many games, which is why I wondered if I would be better off with an Archos

It sounds like your heart says PSP.

Mind you, I wouldn't buy it again because I hate the analog joystick in place, but if it's a PSP you deep down want to buy, then buy a PSP and forget the Archos.

Its a really easy answer, if you want to play games and videos then get the PSP. if you want videos (and generally better quality at that) then get the archos.

I have one of the older archos players, the AV500 and I have to say it is awesome. I don't use it now as much as I used to, but the picture quality for the size is still very impressive.

ok, so say I do get a psp, does it matter these days what firmware version you get??
I remember it used to be that you had to have certain firmware version for any homebrew to work, is that still the case?? (I would be getting a slim n lite btw)

I don't want to be carrying discs around at all, I want to be able to run everything from the mem stick

If you're going to make homebrew apps then you're best off getting a relatively old firmware. I think around version 2 was the favourite for most.
Basically, the newer the firmware, the harder to roll back so try and stay away from 5 as best as possible.
The Slim & Light shouldn't give you any problems with rolling back to a workable firmware version. I've never actually made homebrew on my PSP though mainly because when I fancied getting custom apps I was on a late version 4

well ordered myself an Archos 705

deep down knew i wouldn't really play enough games to justify the PSP, and didn't like the look of any camera's in the price range

(cameras seem to have gone up in price recently..)

completely skint again now, but at least I've got my missus' xmas sorted (bought her a dsi bundle with the rest of my cash

goddamn it's AWESOME.
gotta go buy my plugins now, but already I'm seriously glad I got this ahead of a psp (who says bigger isn't always better?!? i got 7" of POWA!!!!
