Disney buys Marvel

In a deal that combines two of entertainment's most popular brands, The Walt Disney Company announced its agreement to acquire Marvel Entertainment and its over 5000 characters in a stock and cash transaction. Marvel shareholders will receive $30 and 0.745 Disney shares for each share of stock they own. This brings the total price per share to approximately $50, making the total value of the deal around $4 billion.

Does this mean no more deaths in films with comic books' heroes? That would be fun.

some earlier Disney is pretty damn dark in places mate..

I've heard news channels calling this is a fairly bold move considering 'current economic crisis' blah blah, but really, are comic book heroes ever gonna be unpopular, regardless ?
doubt it

Disney have made 1 or 2 of my favourite movies just ever, so I'm not too worried that they'll screw up our super heroes

Nah, nowadays, almost all films are made so that they "appeal to the wider audience" (wider target audience = more cache, or so they think).

Unfortunately, when you try to make a dish that anyone could eat, you must consider that some people can't eat sweet food, others fatty, or spicy, or too salty, some are vegans, yet others are allergic to nuts, wheat, soy etc and you eventually end up with something that can be gulped down and which will fill the stomach for the moment, but is utterly tasteless and no one will really enjoy.

You can always make many different ones and sell them all.

Re: Disney buys Marvel

I agree, but it seems to me that the mainstream filmmakers are trying to sell every film to every viewer. Almost every major film follows the same pattern: a pinch of romance (but nothing too racy), more or less funny jokes getting cracked every now and then, a bit of personal drama to make the viewers feel something for the otherwise unimposing protagonist... Only the faces and backgrounds are changing.

And when picking those backgrounds, it's best not to step on anyone's toes, so skip anything that has to do with religion, politics, social topics etc and pick something as detached from reality as possible. I think that that's one of the reasons (though not the only) why we've been having a flood of comic based films during the last few years, if you want to shoot a film that is distant enough from any sensitive topic to not offend or repel anyone, then giant robots from outer space kicking each other's a**es are an almost obvious choice.

Re: Disney buys Marvel

You can still make films about robots from space and use it to pass messages about politics and religion.

The problem is not the film makers, the problem is the producers. There are also just a couple of ways to write a script if you want to have a good chance of selling it/making money out of it. They are very specific ways almost as a blueprint, but it is more general than what you may think. The problem with how many films recently look/feel the same is that the so called blockbusters follow an even narrower path because, well, it works, hundreds of millions of sales mean something.

You want a good film, watch The Gift from a couple of years ago. More like 5 but anyway... It still follows one of the couple of formulas, but it is very well written and played you don't even notice at first. Or for more action, Man on Fire and Fallen. Great films.

Re: Disney buys Marvel

I agree about the producers. I also understand them to an extent as they make huge investments and therefore take the profitability of their films very seriously. Still, I think that, in the long run, what they are doing is hurting cinematography even financially. I already see people who care much less about films than they used to. I have no idea how much it's going to take before it becomes widespread enough to start seriously hurting the box office results, but I think that it will happen sooner or later. And when it does, I wonder how long will it take the producers to go from the first on the list of possible reasons they come up with (piracy) to probably the very last ("Maybe we tend to make films that just aren't very good?").

Thanks for the recommendations, the names have been noted.

You just know they're going to make a fighting game akin to Smash Bros. You can picture it - Mickey taking the role of Mario and the fans yelling "Oh dear, lord, no!" as Minnie lays some smack-down on Hulk, while others just laugh.

You know...I would actually consider buying such a game. I love Donald Duck and I would love to kick the shit out of his cousin.
EDIT: I am talking about Gladstone Gander.
