Half-Life Crysis?
...was just contemplating
I would say that the title is what elder geeks (like myself) go through rather than mid-life crisis. Buy a Camry. Then a 30 inch IPS monitor - no wait - two of 'em, high end mainboard with a Core i7 (overclocked, naturally), a nice CPU cooler, at least 6G of fast DDR3, two dual-GPU video cards, 5 SSD's (raided), 3Tb external eSata storage, Blu-Ray burner, that nifty Silverstone RV-02 case... Surely those goodies will invigorate the male juices!

I was honestly expecting a gaming discussion.

Not fare! I got a '93 Astro van, completely rusted out..... and a house. No geek toys.
Oh, and if this is "half life", I gotta tell you right now, I'm not looking forward to living to 100+. No way man!

I understand what psychologists and popular pundits say some men go through in their forties and/or fifties - attempting somehow to hold on to youth - some so bent on retaining it that they abandon responsibility and practicality. I think really it has a lot to do with keeping one's life moving forward in a personally fulfilling way - that there is still tons of time to do new and satisfying things - especially if the previous twenty years have been stagnant or routine, with lots of self-sacrifice. For some, the rubber band respresenting the level of self-sacrifice snaps, and one's perspective turns (inappropriately) 180 degrees to self only - which can cause a lot of pain to others in that person's life. I'm sure each of us have seen or heard of instances like that. I drive a 89 Corolla with 399,000 miles on it - no kidding! Nothing like getting 30+ mpg nowadays. I really was just thinking the title was a funny play on words, yet was an appropriate synonym. Life and living is good! 102 years would suit me pretty well. Just rambling - and part of this train of thought is because I just lost a close peer at work last weekend. He was full of life, and was a joyful and personable guy, down to earth too... Got into a fight somehow and died of a resultant heart attack last weekend. Absolutely tragic - and my wife and I are going to his funeral service this morning. We were very close, as work buddies, for a long time - over 10 years. I'll miss him a lot...

Re: Half-Life Crysis?
Thanks for the kind comments guys.
I can honestly say that if I were watching me in the pursuit of my hobby, and my living, I might think it unusual too - but it would look like fun - and it is - and my kids love to watch me fiddle with and fix all the stuff! I'm more enthusiastic about the gear than my 19 year old son, and most of the 20 or so students I work with too.Yeah, I've been rearranging my family and work time and priorties over the past couple months with quite a bit of intensity for the first time in years - and it all isn't going perfectly - but will come into more stability in a short time. It was the pondering thereof, in a light hearted manner, that led me to the idea for the thread title.

Re: Half-Life Crysis?
My dad never really went through mid-life crisis. He just said "I'll do what I can while I'm here and wom't give a sh*t when I'm gone"
