Where in the world?
Funny story and quite sadly true.
My girlfriends young brother buys a microsoft wireless laser mouse and keyboard set today from PCWORLD, the 7000 series. He says its not working, so i have a look at the receiver which has clearly an issue as it loses the connection over 2-3 foot distance. I check it on another machine, change the batteries, even try it on a macintosh in another room so any other signals aren't interrupting directly. I box it up and drive to PCWORLD .. anyhow the tech guy in PCworld listens to me and says he will test it, so after a few minutes he comes out and says to follow him in. I ask him why he is installing the software and he says "well it helps the signal sometimes". I say "really? since when, its just installing intellitype" - it installs and it works, to about 3 foot and he says "so whats the problem with that? thats perfectly fine." I then explain there should be a 30 foot range with a 2.4GHZ system and he says I am wrong, so I find on the back of the box a little panel which states "signal range up to 30 feet". So he says "but that says UP to 30 feet!". I then lose my temper and he calls the manager and i say they are far too used to dealing with OAPs and people who haven't a clue what they are talking about. I end up getting him a replacement but I pay extra to get a logitech bluetooth mouse and keyboard for him (MX 5500 revolution). On my way out guy waiting at the services desk for some repair work on his PC says "good on you man, I hate these guys". Just wrote an email to their head branch as well about it. |

Re: Where in the world?
Customer services are usually like this in every hardware related company , even having a valid warranty they sometimes allege that it doesn't cover "x" fault.

Re: Where in the world?
that's why i mostly buy old stuff... so i don't have to scream and yell each time i have to use my warranty... this way, if it brakes, at least i know i bought it cheap and the warranty is long gone...

Re: Where in the world?
I have heard plenty of storys about tech support in computer stores...
but even this guy should of thought that a wireless set up is totally pointless if you can only go no more than 3 feet away... Even the average Wired keyboard must be 3 to 4 feet long. what an idiot... hopefully Allan my gain something out of this after writing to the head office as an apology in some way. |

that's sad!, all they want is a sale, doesnt matter how / who they are selling it to, even if it doesn't work, hope they don't send you the same mouse as an apology!

Re: Where in the world?
That's not stupid, that's shameless, three feet is awfully short and that guy knows it.
This sort of behaviour is not limited to tech support. A friend of mine needed some blood and urine tests recently and the people who performed the tests screwed it up completely, looking for wrong things in the wrong places. On top of that, they tried to explain to her that they did what they were supposed to do and that all the crossed items on the results sheet mean not that they didn't do the particular test, but that they didn't find any of "such-and-such", which, being a doctor herself, my friend knew was completely impossible. As the result of their screw-up, she had to start a treatment without the results which, fortunately, went okay because she's in her late twenties and she hasn't got any serious problems with her kidneys, but an older, sick person could have been brought into a life threatening situation.

Re: Where in the world?
Ivan, first of all, don't bet on that tech guy knowing that three feet is too short.
Still, what I said wasn't about that, but about the tech guy thinking he could outsmart someone when he was obviously of lower IQ than his potential victim.

Re: Where in the world?
lol thats funny.... i used both of those.....
the 7000 mouse definitely had something wrong with it..... always had good range with mine... the MX 5500 set is also great, got one for my uncle, its always used around 8-10 feet away from the tower and responds very well... hope you get something good in return for all that trouble.... really sounds annoying....

Re: Where in the world?
lol.
that's great. ran into the same issue i purchased a few microsoft wireless desktop keyboard/mice combo packs as they stated 30 feet and there were a number of good reviews. unfortunately i can't go more then say 4-5 feet and i lose signal... they also eat AA batteries every freaking 4-6 hours and as soon as the battery starts getting low.. you have to get closer to the receiver or else pop in fresh ones. sent the suckers back to the supplier and they had a fit cause i had them stocked beyond there "return time" and i had to give them shit as i considered them faulty or not as advertised. I got stuck with one cause i had unwrapped and tried it out for a number of days... Don't want to sell the hunk of crap to anyone cause i'm sure they'd get pissed off popping 4 bucks worth of batteries in it every day.

Re: Where in the world?
Well Z, at least he got a MUCH better mouse/KB out of the deal
![]() I've been using the MX 5500 for close to a year now and I really like it. Granted, Setpoint is a bit lacking, but there is a cure for that. uberOptions www.uberoptions.net which you install on top of setpoint. It greatley expands on the programability of the kb/mouse, and even allows for programming keys and buttons that Setpoint doesn't address. As for 'clueless' employees in places like PCWORLD, Best Buy, etc, they are everywhere. Sometimes I wonder if management in some of those places don't want tech savvy help.

Re: Where in the world?
they don't.... or else they wouldn't make any money at all..
they will fire anyone that is efficient and does their job without requiring the pc to come back for more service at a later date. this is proven fact... not all of them are like this... but many are.. this applies to mechanics in canadian tire/midas/etc and so forth related to vehicles and whatnot... to even the simplist of repair shops involving almost anything..

That microsoft bundle was pretty rubbish. the signal strength was poor, not sure if it was a problem with that particular unit, but after making such a bitch fest in the store I didn't fancy coming back again with another one and finding how it is actually how they are meant to be ! Re: Where in the world?
hay Z am glad you sorted it out . On a similar matter i recently bought a wireless mouse for a friend not sure the make (was probably the same MS one) but i decided to check its range at the store and it would stop responding after around a metre when it should work for 5m at the very least, and the tec. guy at the counter was telling me that that 1m was very good range???? WTF Needless to say i asked for my money back and bought a corded mouse instead.

Re: Where in the world?
I remember going into PC World in Bradford which has got to be THE worst place for customer service i've been to in my entire life. Went in once and asked if i could get a price for a Radeon HD3850 and all i got was a blank stare by the retard behind the counter, when i said "Graphics Card?" he went "Uuuh i don't know if we sell those" despite the GPU shelf which had a crap selection was literally right behind me, As in if i kicked out i'd knock it over behind me.
Went in ages ago with a prebuilt system my parents bought me for christmas asking about a faulty Ram slot, the right one didn't work at all. Took it in, left it there for testing and a few days later they called me saying i could come pick the system up. So we went through the ballache of getting the boxes out and everything so we could bring it back safely in the car and when i got there another trained retard said to me they couldn't find a fault with x component (Can't remember which one but it was the wrong one) so i told him it was the right ram slot, not x component. The guy then started to get a bit heated and told me that he's trained blablabla he knows what he's doing. So i really lost my rag and i was doing everything i could not to yell at him then reach over the counter and slap him because he wouldn't listen to me. I couldn't tell him that i'd tried different sticks of memory otherwise warranty's gone, so i said that it's supposed to have 1gb of memory and only had 512mb despite there being 2 sticks in there so there must be a faulty slot or a bad stick. He asked me to pick up the computer and leave the store, So i did, then my dad drove me over to CCL which wasn't far from PC World and i picked up a new mobo, then fixed the problem myself. I hate PCWorld. At least CCL Don't screw me about |

Re: Where in the world?
hmmm...
i hate prebuilts.. I laughed when i called dell on this situation.. User got a new machine from dell but didn't have a dialup modem in it because dell refused to put one in it as "it doesn't come with one and blah blah" So a new dell arrives, they bring it to me, i install the modem OBVIOUSLY breaking the warranty void seal WITH permission from the customer. less then 3 weeks down the road the dell machine has a fit and crashes and required by dell to ship it to them for repair. I get a call from the customer that I voided their warranty.... I made it perfectly clear that when they brought it in, that i was going to break the seal, which MIGHT have reprocussions.... however there shouldn't be any issues at all with getting warranty work done. Dell apparently called it tampered with and refused. customer brought in the machine and i did the work of calling dell themselves. After a lengthy period on hold and multiple transfers.. and finally being allowed to speak with the supervisors.... I had a good 15 minute discussion, the first 5 minutes i was expecting him to hang up on me (i've had that happen). the remaining 10 minutes finally got through to the guy that a dialup modem wasn't present in the machine when it was shipped and it required one, therefore someone had to do the work and it was me, i had to fax my certificate stating that i was qualified, afterwhich they put a note on the customers account for repair reguardless of the seal being broken. This is a perfect example of bullshit. You buy a product from a company, and you have thousands of other people capable of working on the product. It's kinda like Buying a brand new car with everthing but the stereo you want... and installing a different stereo results in all the warranty being voided. PC builders NEED to get their heads outa their ass.

Re: Where in the world?
Yes. it's the warranty void if broken seal... sometimes you can get away with it if you heat up the seal enough to get the glue to break lose so the seal doesn't break and you can fiddle without "appearing" to have.

Re: Where in the world?
Anyone had/have a HP dv9000 series laptop?
My sisters died a few weeks ago due to (i think) overheating, which screwed up the mobo/graphics card. My dad took it to a store and they told us "yeah this has happened to nearly every single one of these laptops brought in here" They just die after about 2 years. And HP has recognized that its a problem with these series, but they're not doing anything about it. My mum thinks they set timers on products that as soon as they go out of warranty they break down
