Re: So you think you can overclock???

I'm just enough of an electrical engineer to think "Even if someone did manage to increase the frequency of the current 15 times, it would still deliver the same amount of power." so it just wasn't too funny to me.

Re: So you think you can overclock???

Clearly , any electrical device run only on their designed frequency (usually 50 or 60 hz depending on region) , the professor told us the grid should maintain the designed frequency +/- 0.5 Hz otherwise the devices connected would be damaged.
So , I believe this article is fake , but thanks anyway.

Re: So you think you can overclock???

Notice that they used an "AMD" fan heatsink on this design? My first AMD system was an Athlon XP 2400+ which was supposed to run at 2.0GHz, but I fried the CPU upon installation "apparently". This is the story, I had the CPU in the socket and the heatsink was connected on one side and I thought the other until after I had tried to boot it and it wouldn't start I went in to double check and one of the clips had come off, you see I didn't use a screwdriver to secure it so obviously I hadn't connected it properlly. Anyway when I booted it up there were a series of constant beeps that spiralled down in scale until there wasn't anymore sound. It's weird to me that this fried it though as "how much heat can seriously be built up that can actually be cooled in that instant?? ANyway it never worked again, Thanks AMD for your brilliantly design physics hardware.

Re: So you think you can overclock???

Back in the Athlon 1.2 T-Bird days, those puppies would fry themselves in about 5-7 seconds if it didn't have the HSF on it.

There was at least one 'enthusiast' site that did it just to see how fast one would destroy itself

I remember that - i think one site even filmed one actually blowing itself up

Re: So you think you can overclock???

I saw a clip in which an Athlon blew up, but that one was fake (though relatively spectacular).

However, one of their CPUs, a 130nm, 2GHz Athlon64 3000+, was a victim of one of my dumber computer related errors, as, after cleaning up the case on one occasion, I forgot to plug the CPU fan to the motherboard. I must say that I was rather glad with how quiet the computer had become after the cleaning. Then I started up a game and the machine started beeping. I cursed the motherboard for reporting the CPU temperature at least 10C higher than it really was (which was true), exited the game and went to the kitchen to make myself dinner. It was when the computer started beeping again, idling, that I realized that something was seriously wrong, ran to it and unplugged it from the mains. This story has a happy ending, though, as that little puppy is still alive and kicking in my secondary (and until recently primary) machine.

Re: So you think you can overclock???

Yeah, you can get away with that with the newer processors. They will throttle back, and then shutdown.

I had something similar happen when I hit the power button without having my Exos plugged into the loop. System posted, and started loading Windows then shutdown.

That wouldn't have happened in the old Socket 7 days.

This is actually a pretty old story, but still funny

@ OB, I remember the video of the processor "falling" its way through the motherboard because it got to 500+ degrees
