isnt it bastardized in the USA? you used an "S"! shame on you. I don't think you guys know your azz from your elbow

Also if 'on' is used as a time reference and 'at' is a location. explain "I sat 'on' a rock". isnt that depicting a location, at least in the physical sense? Oh how I lol'd.

Re: English grammar test

just a fyi... some of the way the grammer comes across seems wrong to me in that test.... or incorrect... so.. canada.... cannot be used as a whole... and to add insult to it all.. they picked the province i'm in which may or may not be the orgins of the grammer test to begin with.

It's best to view canada as a crapload of different countries and culture inside it, as even in saskatchewan, going from one town to another is almost like another world sometimes.

Re: English grammar test

Very interesting...

Wouldn't it be better to say that "I saw Star Trek during the weekend" or "I'll see it this weekend", or "I sat upon a rock"? English really is complicated that way, and can be a mess with more exceptions to the rules than rules themselves. The last 30 years have been hell on the language - worldwide communications explosion and all I imagine.

The US has its, um, "regional" dialectic differences too "y'all". Thank God for Merriam Webster.

Very true. The English language is also quite easy to mock, especially when you think back now to the earlier years. Many actually might have said "I sat astride the rock and girdled my loins" or "I shall go hence forth and endeavour to enjoy Star Trek this forthcoming rest period". (yes in the golden years the weekends were classed as a rest period).

There is much mirth to be made.

Re: English grammar test

Unreal - yes - that was great!

I used to do that stuff for fun in college - outside of English Composition of course...

I gotta take that quiz when I have an hour.

Excellent! Indeed, such language and use of proper grammar with forethought toward inducement of mirth is most entertaining!

Sorry for the double post: I got an error on the previous post and thought it didn't come through

Re: English grammar test

These where only some 150 questions to finish the test - however, it was one interesting study on its own.

Problem is what Canada thinks is right, the Amis think those teachers need their asses caned and the Aussie thinks wtf is that all about.

sign lingo anyone?..

Re: English grammar test

Concerning the Aussie slang dic

Ankle biter : small child

is not just right - correct would be:

Ankle biter : small nasty/noisy dog
Rug Rat : small child

and be careful with Amber Fluid as it too can be yellow and it's not beer

Re: English grammar test

That was an engaging exercise, but was unable to finish. It errored out on me after question 132 while proceeding to the next page.

yes, it is amazing to realise what one can do wrong - I had no real idea until I saw it in those questions. I am no native English btw.

That's an interesting point, we would say 'on Tuesday' but 'at the weekend' - what about Christmas? Is that an 'at' or an 'on'?

No idea........ Seems it varies with local dialects quite a bit.
