re: English grammar test

Interesting to skim through it. I actually noticed a few mistakes on the site. Such as question 56- I watched a good movie 'on' the weekend. it should actually be 'at'.

AAArgh! I actually did all of the 140 questions (and I wouldn't have if I knew that there were that many of them) only to get

Re: English grammar test

I'm not going to bother taking this "test". I figure that as long as I can understand what someone is trying to say in a post, it's good enough for me.

I've long since stopped bothering to nit-pick people's grammar. But then, I don't care about much of anything anymore.

got tired answering all the questions.

but seriously English is the most messed up language!, they keep adding word from all over the place into the dictionary!, it is not a pure language! so where is the grammar ?

actually its not. I have a degree in english and when i started travelling I noticed that different cultures have bastardised it. American english for instance is significantly different from what many would class as 'pure' or 'original' english, with Z's instead of S's and 'O's being dropped from words because its 'how they sound'.

Everyone here will have different takes on the language because they come from various parts of the world, and I actually find myself making errors at times because I have spent so much of my life travelling and 'fitting into' various cultures (which really I guess you shouldn't do). It is human nature to absorb the surroundings in some way and take various aspects from it.

if that is the case, what does the dictionary say about it!, most people say that if a word is in the dictionary then "it is English" if not..., but then words like espionage, are in the dictionary, but its roots lie in french!,., and many other words!, so how are you going to use grammar between different languages

I have no idea the point you are making. There are many 'versions' of the english dictionary across various cultures - I have even seen urban dictionaries which incorporate slang words in one way or another.. Many people base their knowledge of English on American dictionaries or perhaps you have an Americanised one in Botswana? I am certainly not saying English is 'pure', not in 2009. But like most things in life, they change. If we used the purest form of english we would all be speaking in a rather different way. In 2040 I can only imagine some of the phrasings we will all be using, if we are still here of course.

my point being that, as you say we use different dictionaries to check our words and the rest, so now if i write an English composition different people (from all over the place) marking it will give you different grades,. thus my question is how do you truly see if one is grammatically correct,? i do however agree the a few underling principles will be the same!

Ah yes, sorry I see your point. Totally correct - I noticed some issues for instance in this test, but clearly its seen as 'correct' in Canada! If this was brought over to England when I did my degree in college it would actually conflict with our own 'rules'!

Actually, no. If its typed that way on this Canadian test I would assume it is correct. I doubt they made an error on a question. Judas verifying it makes sense as he lives there. So its not really wrong, just seems wrong to me because our English rules are different.

No wonder non native English speakers find the language so confusing, when us native speakers have issues!

Re: English grammar test

Hehe , British English is the original , Our teachers and professors told us to stay away from American English because it is grammerless and they change it periodically while British English is more valid.

But when I logged on the internet , I found most people drop the grammar anyway

It's not just Canada, I've never heard "at the weekend" used in the US.... "at" being used for a location and "on" being used as a time reference..........

but technically we bastardised the English language long, long, ago......
