Public Enemies : an excellent mafi-style movie

The movie is based on a true story and is done professionally. Actually it is very touching , if you like Mafia style movies then it is a must for you . Enjoy the sound of Thomson bullets and old car engines snarling . If any one watched it , post your feed back here.

IMDB : Public Enemies (2009)

Did not enjoy the movie in the slightest. Easily the most underwhelming movie of the year.

Really , I think it is one of the best movies I've seen this year. I generally like movies based on real stories.

I actually plan on watching this on the bluray/plasma over the weekend, will let you know comp_ali what I think. It looks great, and the cast alone has me excited.

I was also let down by the movie when I saw it in the theater. Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors but this movie lacks all of his visual style and the HD camerawork appears amateurish in a few major scenes.

Still, great acting, good plot and lots of gunfights makes this a movie you have to see, just don't expect The Untouchables or Heat.

Ditto! I'm hoping the digital look which I hated on the big screen will look better in HD at home. Plus, I need to test out this home theater with some sweet gun play.

Omega, I think digital films have the problem of looking very stretched on big movie screens... I have noticed that most of them (if not imax formatted) have that effect...

It wasn't the aspect ratio just the effect of using that particular model of camera. So many of the scenes look like they were shot with a consumer grade digital camera with a high shutter speed which ruined the look of the era for me. I read something about this when the film came out and apparently a low resolution camera was used instead of one of the better models. Perhaps I'm just being picky.

Re: Public Enemies : an excellent mafi-style movie

I have to say i quite enjoyed it, although I was also slightly disappointed because I thought they should have focused more on the characters at the start of the film rather than just jump knee high into the action. Just my personal preferences showing however as I felt the characterisation side of the movie was very shallow. It is an issue I have with a lot of movies however, they have to keep the pace high to keep the attention deficit mass public watching. Partly the reason why I like TV shows, you connect with the characters a lot more than a 2 hour movie.

Entertaining enough, just nothing wonderful.

That's a natural reaction considering the film starts when Dillinger is already a well known criminal and never bothers to explain why he does what he does or who any of the other criminals are other than their nicknames and that they are "bad" guys because they kill people; same goes for a few of the cops especially one "fat boy" in particular.

I gotta admit, the idea of this material being an HBO series instead would have been an instant classic. Has their even been a tv show featuring the golden age of gangsters and bank robbers?

Turns out you were right. In the theater it looked stretched out and a few of the gun battles shot with what looked like handheld cameras looked bad on the big screen but at home on a plasma those same scenes looked great. Make sure you crank the sound on this movie up! By the end of the movie I had fallen in love with the sound of a Tommy gun

Unfortunately not, closest we got was the sopranos.

I never noticed an issue with the digital image. The copy I saw was not bluray so will wait till the bluray release and watch again. I did like the glitzy 30s America look. The problem I had was I wasn't really engaged by any of the characters so found it hard to really care what happened. Some people have said that it is a movie worth watching twice for full effect.

Re: Public Enemies : an excellent mafi-style movie

hmm , yes the story is somewhat shallow and could have been better however the action side are really impressive. I dunno why they chose to skip some basic elements in the story , probably they wanted to intensify the Action side but they sacrificed the some important sides of the story. But like you said , 2 hours was a restriction factor as well. That's why games have in usual have deep story you are immersed in with the long hours you play and interact with the characters.

bluray quality is very good - didnt see any issues with it. I am not sure I would watch it again - as you said, the problems were with the characters and lack of depth all round. The potential was high, but unfortunately it basically ended up a mafia 'run and gun' film. I am not knocking the action side of the film, it was great, but to maximise the effect I think you really need to feel something for the characters. I never cared once about any of them, even when they died. Entertaining film for an afternoons viewing but once watched nothing really remains in memory.

I don't know why there isn't many Mafia style movies around although the idea has potential. I don't remember any one since Godfather trilogy and Scarface.

There have been a few, although some aren't really pure "mafia" style films. List of Best Mob (Mafia) Movies of all Time

Perhaps the studio played a hand in this movie and we will one day see a longer directors cut which would flesh out the story. I will hold out a glimmer of hope that such a cut does exist, similar to the DC of Kingdom of Heaven.
