Star Trek (2009) question
If you haven't watched the film yet, do NOT read ahead.
So, now the canon Star Trek world is one that Vulcan is no more? In any future movies/series that are set after the events of this movie, there won't be a Vulcan?

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
That's the way I took it. It's an alternate timeline to TOS.

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Saw it last week, as a movie it was entertaining, didn't exactly like the alternate timeline part, and I think this has been mentioned in the other thread on it, the jump to the conclusion of time travel was very, very quick
if there are any other movies based on this one, then there'll be no Vulcan (unless the sequel is an effort to go back in time to stop it from happening) - but I've always wondered what Star Trek would be like post-TNG era, we've had three series based on roughly the same time period, be nie to see what's beyond that

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Oh, so any new movies/series will run on an alternate time lime. Interesting. I am not saying I like the idea, but interesting.
Thank you. Zardon, I enjoyed the film and I can see myself watching it again one day, but for some reason I can't yet explain, I don't like it as much as the other films. Technically it was excellent and no plot holes I managed to detect on one go. (apart from the whole alternate timeline that is). As a sci fi film, 8/10. As a Star Trek film, I haven't decided yet.

I liked the film a lot... The engine room was much more realistic looking

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Yes the movie was great, I didn't like The kirk always getting his butt kicked scenes. I wish he woulda dished more instead of getting stomped on....
As for Canon, this pretty much sets up its own Canon Speaking of anyone interested in the mmo?? |

I thought it was pretty darn good, and Nimoy's reprise was tolerable. I was impressed, but not overwhelmed.

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
I saw it a couple of times and enjoyed it. The filmmakers made the right choice resetting the timeline because now anything could happen- including killing off major characters! If I had to nitpick anything, it would be that every actor is way better looking than the originals...it's hard to picture Carl Urban turning into Bones after a few years (way to let yourself go!).

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
It was better than I expected, but I think some fans will make comparisons with the original Star Trek cast, TV series and films, in that respect, the original is definitely better for me.
I just found the new James Kirk a bit obnoxious. |

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
I really enjoyed the film except for two minor issues. Minor spoilers ahead!!! My first issue was that I couldn't believe the crew would let Spock eject Kirk to a virtually uninhabited planet. Don't they have brigs on the ship? The reason for this plot point was even worse: have 10-minutes of exposition with old Spoke. I think they could have handled this better.
But besides these two minor quibbles it was a good flick.

I think they went with that because Kirk was coming across as cockroach that reguardless of where he was put or denied.. he always managed to someone weasel around it and Spock at the time just wan't in the right mind to bother putting up with it..... I agree it was a pretty damn significant jump from skipping the brig.. they could have easily added more film to have a better reason to throwing him in an ejection seat and hitting the button. Either way... i agree.. it's a bit of a minor quibble considering how good the movie is. To bad we got to see very little of scotty....

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Yeah, Scotty was awesome. Not a big surprise there considering the awesomeness of the actor.
Chekhov was good too, loved his part. Mark my words, he will become a great actor. Spock's mother was good too and she didn't steal anything, which was a huge bonus. The big question now is, when is the sequel coming out?

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Yeah many of the characters worked very well, and that added to the feeling of pleasant surprise that I got out of the movie. I thought it was a bit short with all the new to be taken in, especially as the future of a follow-up movie with the same cast is so uncertain without a series to bind them.

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
I remember years ago picking up a spoken word album by Shatner and Nimoy's Bilbo Baggins record.
in my day, they would put a recording on a flat plastic or vinyl disc with a single groove that was cut into the surface of the platter. then you would put this on a rotating turntable and put a sensitive stylus in the groove. the platter would rotate at either 33 1/3 or 45 rpm and reproduce the sound etched on the plastic. It was of superior quality to the digital recordings we know today. I often missing spinning records and chilling out to music.

Re: Star Trek (2009) question
Count me in the minority. the latest trek movie was disappointing. Kirk was weak and I kept thinking spock was going to start cutting peoples heads open or fix all the watches on the ship (slyar from heroes).
Wasn't a bad movie but it just seemed to me like the 2009 series of 'brain dead' films they hurl at the masses to get big sales, like Transformers 2. All the substance of Paris Hilton.
