Cruelty connections
Pet-Abuse.Com - Abuse Connection - The Link Between Animal Cruelty and Interpersonal Violence
This is an article about abusing animals, and why I feel very strongly about the belief that pet abusers are mentally ill or require pychiatric help and intervention. No one wants to see innocent children or animals abused but it is more common than you might suspect. I am not picking a fight with anyone but I have found in my travels and my life, that abusing children and pets or livestock to be a common occurence. According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Northeastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse. Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 25 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association considers animal cruelty one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder.

Re: Cruelty connections
Animals (pets in particular ) instill a sense of responsibility in children and people in general , so abusing them is a definite no..no.. and I agree Falstaff that it is a sigh of mental problems, I have had a Dog for 16 years going strong and I love her to bits so seeing animal cruelty of any kind usually puts me on edge, and would to any normal person at least I hope it does

Re: Cruelty connections
I really find it hard to read reports on either kids or animals being tortured and abused. I hate the thought of defenseless living beings unable to protect themselves against forced oppression and torture.
I think everyone should, but unfortunately we are part of what can be a rather cruel, heartless and even evil species. As a kid I remember walking home from my new job (I was like 16) and I saw a guy kicking his dog and I ended up getting into a fight with him, he was twice my age and even though I was always pretty well built and fit I ended up coming off worse. I did manage to report him to the NSPCA however and they took the dog off him - I was very happy about that. I always end up getting myself in trouble real life however, even if the odds are against me, surprised im still here actually considering some of the situations ive ended up in. |
