My Liz was on post when it happened, from what she said, one of the staff there opened fire on everyone, and then ultimately shot a policeman before he himself was shot.
I heard the count was 11 dead and 32 injured.
This BTW isnt the first time an active duty person has resorted to killing others to be himself killed.
I think it was a suicide and he was insane.
It was cold blooded and he did give advanced warning.
But if it is who I think it is, and that is someone we trained in 2006, he was a psychiatrist, and that I find troubling.
Liz was just released to go home and now the main gate is packed with reporters.
What a media circus, but you can be sure that greater emphasis will be placed on sorting out not only the soldiers and front line troops, but the medical professionals as well.

From what I heard it wasn't just one person responsible for this. So far I have seen one name released and, well, it's hard to not reach any premature conclusions with that info.

At least he was arrested and not killed.

I just read the latest information, and looks like the guy lived, but he was injured and so was a policewoman.
This is just going to escalate.
A radicalized Army professional and a devout Muslim kills his own people.
This is madness.

I can't say I'm totally surprised by this, as a Veteran, I've seen how stressed people can be, but a psychiatrist, losing his mind is simply awe striking, this is a pretty tragic event, especially since so many were unarmed, and what not.....

And now today, Orlando (near me) had a bloody shootout.... Not a great day for America....

It's very sad and my prayers are out to those suffering in the situation.

Obviously we don't and probably never will know the truth or the whole story. The guy could have decided he was going to jihad his way to finding a cool wife (or 72 two of em or whatever) or maybe he just snapped and that was how he was going to get out of going overseas and protest the war. Or maybe it was his work that caused him to snap (and why I say he reminded me of Mike in some way) - the guy worked psych with injured patients returning from the ME. Saw and heard lots of really bad stuff. Supposedly it had started really getting to him. Supposedly a loner & social outcast too. As so many of the crazies that do this stuff seem to be.
Most likely it was a combination of all of that.

Sucks he had apparently received some weapons training beyond basic bootcamp instruction. It was apparently affective.
Also sucks that on a base full of soldiers only the police and response team folks carried weapons. Guess they aren't any better off than the average Joe is. Actually worse since Texas has pretty good carry laws... It's a military installation, if a nutter goes off everyone that isn't the initial one or two targets should have at least a side arm immediately to hand to put down rabid individuals. *rolls eyes*

I read about some of the parents that were stuck outside the base while their kids were inside at a school or daycare. I'd have likely ended up in the brig or hospital if that was going on and I couldn't get to my son. I've never thought of it but that in itself is a good reason why I'd not have my kid in a daycare on a base. At least if I wasn't normally on the base too. If anything wonky ever goes down around here you guys can bet dimes to donuts that my arse is on the way to go get my boy in my hands. Then my wife. Then home.

Ther were questioned and released. That happend not long after they were arrested.

I was moved today, by stories of heroism and sacrifice, when the alleged shooter fired, some people were killed attempting to stop him, and the courage of the policewoman, a single mother of a three year old child inspired me. I don't know why the shooter took so much life and fired on defenseless people, I can only speculate.
The army is no stranger to adversity, but the focus is squarely on the staff of the hospital and the military to now to re-examine how the military does business.
This is not the first time anyone murdered fellow servicemen and women. What is heartbreaking, is that at home, unarmed men and women lost their lives to someone that professed to be a practicing Muslim and yet violate the teachings of Allah and killed.
Its not he first time and I believe it wont be the last either.
