Avatar - excited or not?

Avatar is out in the US on 18th december - are you all excited? So much hype behind this movie its hard to wonder if it will ever live up to expectations.

I watched the trailer after play.com sent me a free bluray with a trailer on it - not sure at all if I like it, although its pretty hard to judge.

Anyone got tickets booked to the premiere?

Oh yeah, HD trailer is over here if you want a look http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/hd/

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

I am worried. I find the story interesting, but I am worried that the effort to create a stunning movie will leave it very very shallow and with very in your face moral "dilemmas".
I am going to watch it eventually, I just don't know how or when.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

I must admit I'm excited about it, I feel it could be just my cup of tea. If nothing else, it will be visually impressive.
Pity the game is mediocre, according to reviews.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

They played the trailer at the cinema the other week, story could be ok, but I didn't like the visuals too cartoony going from the live action to the tribe people, just didn't seem to fit for me.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

I'm not excited but I'm interested enough to go see it when it arrives in theater. I'm not going to go to the premiere, I never do.

I would be curious to see the 3D version but the closest 3D theater is a 3 hours drive by car. I'll probably only see the 2D version.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

This was touted as being revolutionary - something not seen before in terms of visuals. So when I saw the trailer it was a bit 'meh'.

Can't say I'm that interested now.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

I too see the risk of a shallow action movie with Sigourney paid well just to give the movie some credit with SciFi fans, but primarily I don't like the animation at all. It's not badly done, but just not my taste. And Zoe Soldana should have been a live character, what were they thinking!?

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

ive seen the trailer for it on tv several times now, and every time i see it i keep asking my self one question. "wtf did i just see?" i dont think theres a single word spoken in the trailers ive seen. its just... mechs vs woodland creatures.

i still have no idea what the hell the movies even supposed to be about.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

The trailers did not impress me nor has the storyline (didn't I just see that in Battle for Tera?) but James Cameron has never failed us. I'm actually old enough to remember how much Titanic was supposed to be a terrible flop and I was there on the first show of opening day in a mostly empty theater and look how that turned out...I will see Avatar opening weekend in Imax 3D and I know it will be great just like Titanic was. Never doubt James Cameron, he gave us some of the best sci-fi movies of all time he's not a one hit wonder like George Lucas.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

Titanic isn't one of those movies that stood the test of time but as a movie going experience it was great...the repeat business proved that. I felt the same about King Kong, it was awesome in the theater but then on DVD...90 minutes just go get to the action

oh god, dont get me started on king kong. i thought that was just flat out terrible when i saw it in theaters.

it probably would have been decent if every scene was cut down by half.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

I never saw the full movie of Titanic. Two reasons. One is that I know how it ends, the boat sinks. The second reason is because of that stupid song. When the movie was released I couldn't walk 5 seconds before I could hear some chick listening to it at full volume. Then on radio and even on TV shows etc. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE that fraking song.

i liked the titanic, very touchy, yet stupid!

Avatar, I'm not really sure, i do want to watch it because of the grafix and the fusion, but i think I'll just wait for a DVD instead!

Same thing for me, well the first part. I've never seen the whole movie. I tried to watch it a few times when it aired on tv but I lost interest after 30 to 60 minutes.

Avatar looks like it's about some humans getting intensive plastic surgery to look like the native of an alien planet to infiltrate their society. No idea why they do it. They did that kind of stuff often in Star Trek, except that alien always happened to be the same height as humans. I don't know how you would go about extending the length of limbs of humans by surgery. That would be painful.

Potential spoilers:

From the trailers I have seen it is going to be a mix of Star Trek Insurrection combined with Surrogates.

This. Dood hasn't had a film that flopped in like 25 years.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

Haven't seen anything on this movie before. I did read about the game, but never saw anything of the movie. This was my first time watching a trailer (the one on the official site, I don't know if it's the one Zardon linked to), and it looked pretty impressive. Definitely something I could get into. I liked the visuals, except where it looked like CG humans. So I'm pretty excited now. Will wait to see what people say.

Edit: Thinking back, I realised the trailer got exciting for me when I saw Sigourney Weaver. So further impressions are probably biased.

The back story is that this planet has resources we need for space exploration, and we humans cant breath Pandoran Air so we invented avatars to try and interact (subversively) with the hostile local populous. Only the Paraplegic marine that's the main character falls in love with the main Naruu character (I think they're naruu) but he doesnt know how to tell her, hey im actually one of the people you hate.

Re: Avatar - excited or not?

Tsk, tsk. Everyone here should be answering yes...here's why:
-The Terminator
-Aliens
-The Abyss
-Terminator 2: Judgment Day
-True Lies
-T2 3D: Battle Across Time
...and that little movie called Titanic.

The guy makes balls to the wall action movies and he does it very well. If you thought Avatar was going to be all touchy emotional stuff with Celine Dion songs you thought wrong. Stuff will blow up. Lots of things will die. Ten years from now you might joke how cheesy it was but when you walk out of the theater you'll be very happy. This is not speculation this is what James Cameron does
