I am looking for a budget digital camera for the grabs , I have been wandering through the available models here and prices and I think Canon Poweshot A490 may be the best deal for me. It is 700 EGP = 125$ (yeah for the 100th time , Everything is more expensive here ) I won't go for more than that atm. maybe for a cheaper options but not higher.
What do you think about this camera ?

I don't know much about Cameras but it got good reviews most places and Canon is supposed to be good, it's apparently a good camera for anyone who is on a tight budget.

Here's a good review site with sample photos: Canon Powershot-A490 Review: Overview. The review is fairly positive and in my personal experience, Canon cameras generally offer best photos in the entry level market. So far, I've owned A400 and A590IS. The 490 has the same Digic III processor that's in the A590 I own and it was also used in much more expensive Canon cameras from the previous generation.

Hearing a first hand experience would certainly help.

Still, there is no perfect camera in this price range so what I did when I was looking for cameras was compare the cameras available in local shops for approximately the same amount of money to see which one will give me the most. Someone who only owns one of the cameras can't help too much with that, so I'd look at their reviews on the same web site. That way I got a more even criterion and usually shots of same things were used for testing all of the cameras so I could compare them side by side.

As for the battery life, you can also see that among the specs in the reviews. Your own mileage will vary, but the number stated there conforms to a standard (fresh batteries, half photos without flash, half with full flash), so while it won't tell you exactly how many pictures you can take, you can use it to compare which camera will get you more photos on a single set of batteries.

My experience with my two Canons is that having one spare pair of batteries has always been enough to get me through the day, even if the pair in the camera wasn't fresh. I generally use 2100mAh Varta rechargeables, but I've also had to use alkalines on vacations and I'd certainly get a couple of hundred photos out of a pair (though mostly without flash).

hay what are the odds that we are both in the market for a digital camera, mine just crapped out on me a couple of days ago

PS: it was a samsung NV3 but I think am done with samsungs am looking for another brand coz this one died in a completely annoying manner

naa dude they are way too expensive + i dont take that many pictures so it would be a waste of money, I just need something portable which takes just good enough pictures

So what are you planning to buy? Try and get a Canon if you can, they know how to make good cameras, or even Nikon, they're good too.

Sorry for double post but just wanted your opinions about this one too:FinePix Digital Camera Silver AV130
From the specs it looks better than a 490 and it is cheaper too but is it better in practice ?
I will see some sample photos for both but it is hard to compare between two pics when each one was captured in different places/lighting/.... so I am seeking professionals opinions about both .
